T19 T/C adapter/bearing retainer

Is the bearing retainer/transfer case adapter the same on both the t-18 and the t-19? I was hoping to know before I pull my t-18, so I can use it on my t-19 since it is missing.

As it turns out, they are not the same. To start with the t-18 adapter has mounting holes for the crossmember, the t-19 mounts are cast into the tranny. The largest issue though is that the reverse idler shaft is in a different location and lines up partially out side of the body of the adapter. It will not work at all. I guess I will use the t-19 adapter and do some crossmember fab work to relocate the mount.

Sorry to read the bad news. I've rebuilt both a t-18 and a t-19 out of scouts, and I did not see any difference in their adaptors. Both had the rear cross member support to bolt the transmission to it at the adaptor.

Can you post a picture of your transmission?

All of the t-19s I have seen have the crossmember mount cast into the tranny case. I will post some pics tomorrow.

This is interesting to know. I have a t-19 to swap into the Scout to replace the t-18 in there now. The t-19 has no t/c adapter. I had heard there were some "issues" with a swap. Are the tranny lengths the same?

As you can see in these pics the cast boss in the t-19 is a bit close to the mounts in the t-18 t/c adapter and would make for difficulty in mounting. A t-19 t/c adapter does not even cover the ends of the idler shaft or cluster shaft.

Transmission lengths are the same but yes the adapters are unique to each transmission.

On the left is the t-18 adapter, on the right is the t-19 adapter.

Looks like the t-18 stay's where it is. Anyone need a good t-19? There's quite a bit of cast iron savings with the t-19 adapter.

Any comments on which trans is stronger 18 vs. 19?

I don't believe one to be stronger than the other as they are nearly identical aside from the t-19 having a synchro first gear.

I would say, find a t/c adapter for the 19, move the crossmember forward to accommodate the mount. I am going to make an adapter plate for the bottom of the tranny and convert to using a Ford style urethane mount from Energy Suspension.

Well ihcrawler, I apologize to hell and back for the confusion I caused. I also went out and looked under the Scout, sure enough, just like you posted. Total bonehead on my part.

No problem. I will be putting the tranny back together tomorrow, woohoo wide ratio now. I took the guts out of a two wheel wide ratio, gutted a close 4x and transplanting the wide gears. A little change in the crossmember and I'm good to go. I might go ahead and fab up a tube crossmember just to be fancy and give better access to the front driveshaft bolts at the t-case.

Thanks. I had the t19 in the solvent tank just 8 weeks ago, totally spaced out the adapter difference like Jeff said it was.

Good luck!!

The synchro 1st gear is what I'm after. I've attempted hills in 2nd while towing and not had enough umph to make it. Being able to grab first in those circumstances would be nice.
