Swapping 78 disk brakes to 71 scout two

I have a 71 Scout two and bought a 78 parts scout for the disk brakes. I don't want to swap axles because I would rather have the gearing of the 71 so I'm just swapping the disks for the drums. I took the hub off, bearings, brakes etc off of both scouts but the 78 has an 8 bolt pattern and the 71 has a 6 bolt pattern (the part that holds the drum or disk brakes on to the axle). I was told they would swap but it's not looking that way. My question is this, can I swap the entire steering knuckle? Remove the tie rods, etc and swap the entire unit?
Thanks,

It doesn't sound like you've got a Scout axle in the 78. The 71 will have a D30, the 78 (if that's what it is) will have a D44 which is a stronger axle. Looks like the best option might be to regear the 78 axle.

It sounds like my best option is to swap the front and rear axles to my 71. How much slower will the 4.09 gearing be compared to the 3.72? Will it hit 60 mph?
