Suspension Lift

I have a 1971 sii and in short in dire need of springs. I have read alot about Skyjacker being used more commonly than others and they seem to be the better choice in today's market, although it does not appear that they are made for the 71 sii with the Dana 30 front. I am looking to retain the vehicle as a stock SUA set up, although with a 4 inch lift. I am also interested in alcan springs although I cannot locate anyone who sells them, unless they can be purchased direct from the company. Anyone with help or information in the best direction to take would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, alex

I see no reason why the Skyjacker Scout II springs could not be used on a '71 with a d-30 front axle.

I like the ride of the skyjackers (had 2.5" sj springs for several years), but the rears sat too low. Extended shackles in the rear helped. I now use 4" skyjackers in the front, and 4" triangle springs in the rear.

If you're staying SUA, the spring perches on an sii d30 fa are the same as the later sii d44 fa. Just one of the reason's why the d44 fa upgrade is so popular on early sii's that originally came with d30 fa.

Did you guys with the 4" lifts have to do cut & turns on your fronts?

If they answer yes, you might want to rethink the 4" lift idea (unless your willing do a cut & turn).

Let me make sure I get this right, forgive the ignorance on my part. If I were to do a 4" lift with extended shackels... I would have no problem with my pinion angle / I will have to cut and turn because my pinion angle is too much. I would much prefer not having to cut and turn... I was told that I could use shims 4 / 6 degree and I should have no problem.

O.k. The extended shackles plus the lift May create a pinion angle bind. I do not have extended shackles, just the 4" lift.

With 4" springs and 5" shackles with 4* shims you will be at max driveline angle. Not the most ideal setup but it will get you down the road straight and allow slow speeds in 4wd. Regardless I feel that a cut/turn of the knuckles should be done even on a stock Scout as they were built from the factory with poor castor settings with a driveline angle that stinks.

Thanks everyone for the insight... Jeff, can I send you the knuckles for turning work or is there already a kit available for my set up? Also, will I need a hysteer arm kit? Thanks...

I don't think you understand. The knuckles are the 'c' looking parts welded to the end of your housing. The whole housing needs to be disassembled, welds ground off, knuckles turned and then rewelded. Hysteer kits are not recommended for SUA suspensions as they are mostly unnecessary for such a mild lift and will bring the tierod too close to the oilpan.

I think I get now... To aviod alot of work, if I were to use less of a lift such as a 2.5" / 3" with the extended shackles and a 4* shim, I should be ok... Correct?
