Summer Trip

I have a 2meter hand held radio.

Been working like mad to get the new axle in.
Jesses stopped by and we got the pinion angle set and the spring perches burned in place. Hubs and brakes are on, just need to weld on the shock tabs. But I busted a side hub on the rear detroit. :cryin: I ordered the replacement part from west coast differentials and they could not say when it was going to arrive for sure as its coming from mexico. But did say about 10 days.

So if Matt has an open seat I can ride with him. Or I can drive up and walk 2 miles if somebody will carry my bag/tent/chair in.

I have a propane fire ring which is legal to use with current fire restrictions.

Too bad about the axle Craig.

Its a full house for me. Ben, my brother and his girl friend. I will have space for your gear if you need it.

My youngest son is going to stay home, so I will have an open seat for Craig.

Sean, what time do you plan to roll through sac? I will try to be packed up tomorrow night, but have to change my water pump tomorrow too, so May pack up Friday morning. How long does it take to get to the trailhead from sac?

What's the story with food, stoves? Everyone bring your own necessities?

Assuming wag bags are required too.

It looks like 2 hours 40 minutes from sacramento. I was planning on leaving at 9 am, passing through sac around 10:30. You still have the same phone number?

I'll have all my camp gear (stove, fridge, chuck box, gas lantern, table, ect..). But I also have a full car. Your welcome to any gear you need minus cooler space. Throw in an extra bottle of propane if you need to borrow the stove.

You bringing our old friend cap'n and coke? Room for our traveling buddy?

Well we made it back alive.

It took a lot longer to get in and out then expected.
We were thinking a level 5 trail and it was more like a 7
there are some nice water falls to climb and boulder fields to navigate.

Had a nice time, but it was tiring for sure. I help navigate on the way in, so lots of walking on the trail for me.

We made it to our camp the first night about 10pm.
We left camp by 8 am Sunday and made it to matts house just before midnight. Sean had a hub issues, but we got that resolved. Matt broken an axle shaft right in a boulder field and it took quite a bit of time to get him to a level spot off the side of the trail.
Then getting the old shaft out was complicated by yokes being stretched out of shape and could not slide it out of the knuckle.
Michael had a cutoff wheel, so that saved the day. But then the shaft was broken at the powerlock and we worked for like 2 hours to get that broken part out. Again thanks to michael for being tenacious and not giving up. That piece just did not want to come out.

By then we were all hungry and tired.

Note: you will need extra gas to make this trip, unless your running a 4 cly.

In the end it was a nice trail, but good camping locations are limited. We camped on the dry lake bed near the water the second day.

Also if you break, you need to have parts as its a long long way back to town.

Thanks for the report Craig. Except for the break downs, how long does it take to run the trail? On the way back it took you 16 hours, and the travel time home, but that includes a break down or two it seems.

What also added to the time was both Matt and sean were loaded to the max. Both had to carry enough supply's for 4 people in each Scout. Which means lots more food and camping supplies.

If we had zero issues, it would take several hours to run the trail. Google says 2 hours and 37 min to the trail head.
But that is not doable in a Scout. Maybe a bmw that could corner and accelerate could make that time.

A long trip for sure. The weight was a big problem but after my hub issue was resolved it clawed its way out. I really think this trail should be two hours, minus any problems. The entire trip left us guessing, from where to camp to having enough gas to get to civilization. Both Matt and I ran out of gas, thankfully michael came prepared.

I only managed to get a few pictures...

Sean son is a real camper, he was happy to just play in the dirt:icon_mrgreen:

I really wish my ph did not die. I watch sean crawl up this 30' rock assault with several stair steps. He had the tire pressure perfect and just walked up it. I was expecting an axle to snap or tire slip. But he just keep going. It would have been the perfect Scout video:mad2:

It was a long trip but even with the breakdowns I had a lot of fun. Definitely a memorable trip for sure. Need to add a couple more tools to the arsenal so axle shaft extraction in the future is a tad easier. Oh and to sean, Craig, Matt, and Brian, I forgot about the mickey d's at the foresthill exit and went to the one off of bell. Didn't dawn on me until I was there... Oh well. Here are the few pics I finally remembered to take at the end.

Hell of a trail for sure. Truck was working well climbed like a goat, then that damn 14bolt hung on to a boulder and I tried too hard to get loose. First ripped the ears off the stub shaft, then the shaft went. Was the last major obstacle before the end of the trail too. Thanks to everyone for helping me get the pig out of the way of traffic and getting it back up and going. Michael definitely saved our asses. Big magnet is a must. Less gear is a must if we do this trail again, had a thule box on the roof, a cargo basket on the rear, 4 passengers, tools, spares, coolers, and camping shit :cryin:.
