Starting 4x4 build

63pickup

Hi everyone, im sorta new at this. I have a 63 1200 pickup with a 304/4spd cmpnd 1st that is currently a 2wd. I am also in the process of picking up a 75 Travelall. The 75 has the 392 auto and 4x4. How "easy" would it be to do a cab over swap. From frame to frame that is. I love the look of my pickup and want it to have the 4x4 equipment. Any pointers and outsiders advise would be much appreciated. Thanks

Oh, and will my current tranny bolt to the 392 and still be able to use the transfer case and drive lines? Thanks again

Don't know any particulars regarding the c-series body to d-series frame swap, other than to point out the obvious. Going from pickup to pickup would be easier. There are likely differences in the frames between pickups and t/a's. Probably not insurmountable. Is the t/a a 3/4 or 1/2 ton version? You might find that swapping over the drive train minus auto trans and running gear from the t/a would be more feasible in the long run.

As for the second question, your wide ratio 4-speed will mate to the 392. You should have the flywheel from the 304 neutral-balanced at a machine shop to prevent vibration before mounting it behind the 392. There could be a difference in overall length between the two transmissions. If so, that will have to be accounted for when coupling to the divorced t-case. Both prop shafts should be unaffected by this swap.

Thanks. Im planning on having to do some fabricating to get the cab to fit. Ive been looking for another pick up.. But these trucks are getting to be few and far between.
