Speedo Light Question

I have all new gauges except for the speedo- now I am in the middle of a rewire job and when I put power to the instrument panel I notice the light on the speedo is hot to the touch- I am thinking it may be the light itself? as in maybe I need a "modern" light bulb because I thought the old panel light had a voltage regulator? any ideas? should I swap in a "new light socket/bulb" in the speedo- I have a 68 800

Is this with the lights switched on or off? There shouldn't be any heat generated with the lights off. Incandescent bulbs will generate some heat while illuminated. Think light bulb in a pump house during a winter freeze. The CVR was for the stock gauges, not the indicator lights. Those get full power.

power on- I guess I never gave it much thought till this morning when I was rewiring the dash maybe next time I'll put in LED's
