South LA Scout Build

I am rebuilding a 1978 Scout II that originally had a 345ci, 727, Dana 44 drivetrain. I have a 2wd parts truck that I tore down to the frame and plan on building a custom chassis and drive train for the 78 body to sit on after sand blast and paint. The new drivetrain will consist of a 2002 4.8l, 4l60e, home made 241 gear reducer to a Ford NP205 down to a Dana 60 Ford hp front and 14 bolt rear both measuring 64" with the optional hubs from a dually front and custom rear to run h1 wheels with 8" offest. I am hoping to get some good advice from readers so keep the insults to a minimum. This is the first time I start a build on a forum so take it easy. I will load pictures asap.

Sounds like a very interesting build. Don't worry, this ain't parrot4x4. Pretty bird...squawk...whistle. The worst you might get are some good-natured barbs. So long as your skin is at least one mil thicker than a square of 2-ply, you'll be fine.:icon_mrgreen:

Do you know if this forum is available on ipad app tapatalk. From what I read it is free for the host. I use it on binder planet and pirate and it works great for loading pics and quick reading.

Here is what she looks like, with the addition of the dodge dakota seats using custom build brackets.

Sorry no news in a while been to busy to post
I have built custom shackle reverse kit and modified front and rear axles by shaving the bottom of both and top of Dana 60 (don't ask why I'm still trying to figure that out. )

Don't think so. I think that ihon (owners of this forum) is working on it

btw - good looken Scout

I am not sure what the smog laws are here I have never heard of anyone getting checked. Don't plan on making it pass any kind of emissions test. Although it is probably gonna be better than oem motor with this ls style setup and overdrive tranny.

I decided when I got these axles a long time before I had a vehicle to put them in that I would chave them for clearance. I al so thought it would be a great idea to shave the top of the Dana 60 front axle in order to give myself a flat surface I could easily weld 4 link brackets to. I think I should have waited on this to see exactly what I was putting them in. Since I am building a truck for the street and occasional mud hole this is a little overkill. Here are a couple of pictures

I wanted to lengthen the short side and I had a longer axle out of a kingpin style housing so I pulled the tube out made a new longer one and pressed it all back together and welded knuckels on using flux core wire and heating the material up to 500° prior to welding.

Since I wanted to run a Ford NP205 and needed to adapt it to the 4l60e I wanted to try to build my own 241 doubler so I located a used np241 t-case at the local junkyard and removed all the components I needed for the build. Went to the drawing board and created a 3d model of what I thought would work. With a little help from pictures online of other makers units I came up with this. It also put the reluctor ring and speed sensor in the transmission adapter section.

I am at a standstill untill I can find the right pair of rear leaf springs. I was thinking of doing a 4 link and coils but I really want to keep this build simple and cheap to avoid complications. I think I want to run some 80-96 f150 rear springs that are 56" long 2.5" wide and have a 3" offset centerpin. This should move my rear axle back 3" giving me around a 107" wheelbase. And also making the front and rear driveshaft identical with 1330 cv at transfer case and 1350 joints at the axle.

Looken good. Ya got a sweet setup for your work shop. I vertical mill is one of the few tools I wish I had here in my little man cave of a shop.

Smog:
yuck - I hate dealing with that crap. But with my limited knowledge of smog legalities of doing a smoged vehicle motor transplant like this, is that the replacement moter should be at least built of the same year or newer vintage than when the smog vehicle rolled out of the plant. I could have miss read that info, and/or the legalities of it May have changed
