Silv-O-Lite Piston Warning!!

I have a big warning to put out regarding silvolite piston sets.

I was just given a set of pistons 7082d +.040 to complete a sv rebuild. As always I measure each part for proper sizing and while measuring the piston diameters 7 were right on the money for a .040 os 345 piston (3.912 +.0000 ,- .0005). but one was 3.9075 the piston was also beat up like it had been thrown in a reject bin. The oil ring land was peened over where it had smacked another object. .

This set was made in mexico but I don't know if that makes a difference.

Just want to give you guys who May be building a motor a reminder to always verify each and every part new or old for proper dimensions and fitness.

Good point Robert regarding any engine or vehicle component.

That piston was most likely a "return item" somebody fucked over/dropped and then returned to some warehouse for credit and it got put back in inventory. I've seen the same thing regarding any part hundreds of times over the years.

Where the items individually boxed or in bulk-pak??

Email me the details on the sourcing chain, hope it didn't come from the wd source we discussed previously. But if it did, then they need to know about this, same as whoever the source was.

And a prime example of why ya must have the pistons on hand when cylinders are being prepped for bore, each hole must be bored/finish honed to the piston that is going to run in the hole.

There is no doubt that the actual inventory of these particular pistons is very small nationwide due to the scarcity of these engines being done by pro engine shops today. There is simply very limited demand for this stuff. But that is no excuse for something like this.

I recently sourced a set of eight piston rings locally for a plain old 350 sbc, an off-the-shelf deal available at 7-11 everywhere. The "factory sealed" set was missing two of the oil ring separators. What a bitch that is when you make a plan to complete something and then can't!

dang, those were the planned pistons for the 196 rebuild......

Don't sweat it michael!

There is much story behind the story regarding Robert's discovery! This will not happen with your stuff!

Robert's deal is an anomally...shit happens...but in his case...shit has been happening for a long time due to the source of the shit!

Imo the sl pistons are the best on the market for a basic to mild performance build, so you made the right choice.

The 7 are with in .0002" of each other. That is good. We will set up at .003-.0032" p-c clearance.

These were drop shipped from sl so no real correlation to the deal at hand. Just one of those things.:rolleyes5:
