shifter cable adjustment

I searched for this and read through the guapo but can't find instructions for adjusting the shifter cable when installing a new one.

I bought a new cable and right now I can get park, reverse, neutral, and 1 to work fine but 2 and d are noisy. If someone could point me to instructions or post them here I would really appreciate it.

I have a 1977 Scout II rally with the 347 v8 and the 727 if that makes a difference.

You have a '77 sii rallye edition with a 345 sv8 engine. There is an in depth procedure for adjusting the auto trans shift cable outlined in the factory service manual available for purchase right here:
service manual for 1976-77 Scout II, terra or traveler - IH Parts America

The biggest problem with adjusting this cable in a Scout is the difficult access as a result of how things were shoe horned into this compact platform. When your shift lever is all the way forward in park, the trans linkage is all the way rearward. Conversely, when the selector is all the way rearward in l1, the trans linkage is all the way forward. Those are your polar extremes for cable travel. Every other point falls somewhere in between. Understanding that relationship and getting those polar extremes correct will be the key to having every other detent in between fall into place by osmosis. There are clevis fittings on both ends of the cable. Getting this adjustment dialed in is sometimes just a painstaking pita process of trial and error. When you think you're getting close, make small length adjustments and observe. The clues that you are getting close will be:
1. Starter motor will only engage in p and n positions. This is assuming your neutral start devices are present and fully functional.
2. Positive yet quiet engagement and slight engine rpm drop can be felt systematically in each forward selector position... D, 2, 1. When coasted down a steep hill with the selector fully back in l1, the engine will hold and brake, rpms will climb rapidly and the trans will refuse to upshift until your hand physically moves the lever forward.
When 1 and 2 above are good, you're pretty much there. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply I guess.... I was hoping there was some more specific steps. Like start with the clevis end all the way screwed on or start with both ends centered. But if it's just a guessing game, I guess I'll put a bedroll under the truck and keep guessing.

You're welcome...I guess. I know it would be nice to have the cable adjustment fairy come along and do the job while you're asleep. Welcome to classic vehicle ownership, unencumbered by entitlement syndrome and intrusive, on board diagnostic scanner docks that might come between you and a budding, intimate relationship with your Scout.

Lol. I ain't looking for a fairy or a regular guy to do it for me. I just was hoping for some slightly more specific steps. Like when I tore the power steering box apart and rebuilt it or the carb or... Or... Or... I've redone a lot on this truck but never had something with no definites. But if that's the way it is I gotta roll with it.
