Shift Back In Gear

I'm hoping to get the best procedure to avoid too much stress and damage. When the transfer case slips into neutral, what's the best procedure for getting it back in gear without grrr grrr grrrinding?

Thanks

Shut the engine off and wait a moment for tc gears to stop spinning, then shift the tc into 2h and re-fire the engine. The 727 and d20 tend to fight each other at times when the engine is running.

The method that I have always used ( can't recall if it was from the service manual ) is to come to a complete stop, shift the transmission into neutral with a hand on both the trans shifter and the transfer case lever. As you do this, then you simultaneously pull both the transmission and the transfer case levers down into drive and 2 high.

Hth, ken

ps scoutboy74 beat me to it - that method also works

Shifting between high range 2 and 4 can be done with the vehicle in motion up to @ 50 mph, ie "shift-on-the-fly" or while stopped. Shifting into and out of low range cannot be done on the fly. I've found the method described by ken is helpful in moving the tc lever from 2h forward into 4l while the engine is running, and for getting the lever out of 4l into n. That's when the grinding issue is most prevalent for me, which is why I don't even fight the n to 2h move with the engine running any more. So much easier to kill the engine for that last little pop.

For me it is the detent spring issue causing it to pop to n. I'll try this till I can get new springs put in it. Thanks

So it pops out of 2h under normal driving conditions? That would suck! Sounds like an overhaul is in order. Even after that's done, I'm betting you'll still have the grinding issue to deal with whenever going from n to 2h after you've been in 4l. Slowly cycling the gear selector between p - r - n and back while you work the tc lever always helps, but ultimately, so does shutting off the engine.

Okay. That's the more common occurence. Until you pull the case for repair, you can use a bunji cord or the like wrapped around the lever and hooked up under the dash to help prevent the popout.

It seems to really push it out. It moans and then finally pops to n. I've driven with my hand pushing on it and it seems like it really fights to get to n.

Mine jumps out of 4hi to 2hi coasting , but not under load.

You get much snow aubrey? 15in here at work.......

I had a 4h to 2h pop this morning. So I guess both springs are pretty much shot.

Good chance of it. One other possibility would be interference from the shift lever opening to shift lever as the result of a body lift or even body sag from extremely worn body mount bushings. Another would be from a front drive shaft that is binding at one or both pinions from too steep of an angle or has too much slop and play in the slip yoke.

Thanks for the other items trevor.

Coasting is when mine pops. Under load it is fine. I don't think much snow but hey I drive a Scout (allbeit stock). But feat got activated last night so it's bad enough I guess. I drove the Scout to work this morning and didn't have any problems chuggin along at around 25 - 30 mph.
