Ok guys, get your heads out of the gutter :out:

one last IH work day for the year. Same place as the last work day here in my shop space.
401 1st st
unit #105
richmond, CA 94801
it's about 2 miles from the richmond/san rafeal bridge and 3 blocks from richmond parkway between w. Barret ave and macdonald ave. If ya need better directions feal free to post here or pm me.

Planning on starting to strip off most of the damaged body off my barrel rolled 74 Scout. I will most likely be off work the week before (but might be out of town, but not sure yet) and the week after. Not sure about a bbq if it rains, but one of the local pizza deliveries is prety good with food other than just pizza.

Another work (or hang out) day soon afterwards. Weather or not if it turns in to an actual work day, it just might be a good starting point for the north bay iher's to start getting together.

Ok - I changed the date to the following week after new years. Same location, just different day. I kinda forgot that most people prefer to go out partying that weekend.

Since I'm off work most of the week before new years and all of the week after, I will be around my man cave most of the time. So if any one doesn't have anything to do and wants to come and hang out let me know

Whats the plan? Replace the sheet metal?

I have a huge slide hammer and a winch. You can pull the quarter panels back out. That's what I've done. I've smashed mine lots of times. No barrel rolls like yours :eek6:.

Basically over 95% of the body is damaged. The only thing that didn't get a scratch and is still functional is the tailgate. Passenger door is totaly caved in from hugging the tree. Driver side door does open, but outer sheet metal, if kept, needs a total replacement. The windshield frame is a total loss, from collapsing down to the steering wheel, and would need to be replaced from firewall up. Plus, the frame is a little tweaked at the spring hangers under the tailgate. If I actually rebuild it, I don't thing it would ever be safe to drive on the street. And end up being a trailer queen. Which brings up two draw backs - I don't have a trailer and/or a rig to tow it.

Was planning on starting to cut off all the damaged body parts from the doors forward. Some things May be a little difficult for one person to handle by oneself. About the only parts that are really salvagable are the dash with gauges, seats, and axles. Hopefully no damage to the axles. Motor would need a rebuild, since the Scout sat upside down for about an hour.

It maybe cheaper to replace the Scout completely. But ideas of turning it into a buggy has come up. I'm sure other thoughts May come up as time goes by.

If weather is good, I May brake out the bbq. If not, there's a fairly decent mexican restraunt not too far(about 9 blocks) from my shop space, and there's a local pizza delivery that provides food other than just pizza. And there are a few other options for places to go eat not too far. I'll get some snacks in the mean time for while we are working.

Doors' are easy to get and replace. Same with windshield frames hood and front fenders.
I have a spare windshield frame, but has some rust. The frame can be bent back and plated. You would need to get a tape measure and check to see how bad it is. Those holes on the frame were used on a jig when built.

As for the motor, I would pull the plugs, turn it over and put them back n. Should start right up.

I just don't want to see you waste a lot of time trying to build a new one. The hard part is the main body. If its just a bit bent, that could be fix.

I know it looks bad, but the headlight still look good.

I'm aware of being able to get body parts. I do have a spare hood and inner fenders and front grill. But in the mean time of piecing it back
together I still need to get another rig of some sort to drive. Walking and public transpo out right sucks for getting the rest of the parts needed. Plus
that motor already had one dead cylinder.

Also, it has been suggested to get a new tub and then swap it over. But then again I do have a 72 Scout II. The headlights can be swapped into my 72 (or some other rig that I get) I was kinda thinking of putting the axles from my barrel rolled 74 back under the 72. Which is where they came from when I did the SOA on the 74. But there's more work on the 72 than just swapping axles. Once ya see what I have to work with you just might get a better grasp at what needs to be done.

As I mentioned before, since both my scouts are not running, I am working on trying to get something that actually drives. If it's another Scout in stock form, I can always do restifications in stages. That's how I did upgrades for my 74. Took me a few years to get it to where it was before the roll. Mostly due to finances.

Anyways, more will be revieled during the next couple weeks. Have a wonderfull Christmas.

I'll be there to lend a hand for sure.

My 2 cents - given that that frame is twisted, the body minus the tailgate is toast, and the engine needs a rebuild I think you're better off just buying something for $500 - 700 off of craigslist that is complete and has body/frame in decent condition, and then adding all your upgrades to it.

Has the insurance come in yet - hopefully that will help with the new purchase?

Two places up north have options for 80/800's that look like good starting points. Pleny of sii options as well...

Your call, I'm here to help ya whatever you decide.

The title on a 74 is worth a bit too. So don't scrap that.

I won't be able to make the party.

I'll plan to be there to lend a hand, but here is my $.02 :).

In my simple inspection there was nothing to suggest the frame was twisted or could not be very easily fixed. From what I saw there is only one small point of separation along the seam at one spring hangers in the rear... Easily beat in and welded back up. I don't think the front of the body is salvageable at all as the front radiator support, hood, grill, inner / outer fenders, cowl are all twisted / thrashed. The tub May be useable, but it is pushed in at the rocker / floor on the passenger side door.

While the motor May need a rebuild it drove to hollister from richmond so still ran decent to go that far.

If it were me I would probably pull off the front sheet metal / cowl and then pull the plugs and crank her over to get the oil out of the cylinders so I could fire it up and see what all was going on. I would fix the spring hanger, and then see if I could get the radiator mounted well enough to take it for a spin around the block and see what else was going on. Then I would make the decision on whether or not to replace the body parts (possibly full body swap if the tub cannot be salvaged).
Replacing front sheet metal / cowl is super easy compared with rebuilding an entire rig (in my opinion).

It looked to me like there was enough work in the frame to keep it (e.g. Gussets, shock hoops, etc.).

Again, this is just my $.02 and I am happy to help you with whatever direction you decide to go.

Cheers,
cheese

Motor was running basically on 5 cylinders. #5 had a comppression about 75, and the rest was between 130 and 140. It was getting time for a rebuild anywas. What was making things worse at the time, was the transmission was getting cooked and over done trans temp gauge was pushing 250 degrees when the roll started. Transfer case shifters are currently tied into a knot and need to be straightened. The other spring mounting bracket for rear end is bent and needs to be straightened. Just to name a few things to think about.

As far as I'm aware of - we're on for this coming Saturday on the 7th. I plan on being here in the mancave no matter what.

So far, I finally got around to cutting off the hood, driver side outer fender and took off the front grill. Other than that, I haven't had much time to work on it. Turns out that I ended up working last week for a couple days and I will be working 3 days this week. We been backed up in my department, otherwise I would have been off work completely these last two weeks

if the weather holds up, I'm tempted to brake out the bbq. Maybe if some one needs a little work on thier IH we could have that as an option too

I wanted to be there but it looks like I'll be working.:icon_crying:
I just can't pass up 10 hours of paid overtime.:ihih:
sounds like scooter will have plenty of help. That Scout will be stripped down to the frame before you know it.
Good luck. Post pictures.

No worries. I can relate to the work thang. Especially when over time is involved. Normally I would have been off work completely the last few weeks, but due to being backed up in my department we have been working most of this week.

As far as tools goes, I prety much have most everything one could ever need for a project like this. Since I have mig welder, acetylene torch, a plasma cutter, a saws-all, and an over head electric hoist just to name a few of the toys here in the man cave.

I'll have pepsi along with some chips & dip and some snacks. Since the weather is looken like it will be good, I May comsider breaken out the bbq. If we do, we'll have to send someone out for a food run. Other option is to call in for delivery from local pizza place (which also has other food other than just pizza), or towards the end of the day we all could head up to mel's diner up in pinole (good food).

If ya drink beer, bring it = byob

Planning to be there around 10ish for the teardown.

I will bring a 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, phillips, standard, allan key, and a hammer... Should be able to get it down to the frame with those lol
