Power Slipping

I am definitely not certain. I rebuilt it myself and adjusted it according to info from these forums and You Tube. I can't fit an electric choke on this carb since it's so old, so I was going to replace it anyways. If it could fix my power slipping problem, that would be awesome.

Unless that clutch disk was oil fouled I don't see how it would slip at all. If you have a DVOM or tachometer, I would see where the RPMs are at.

Does the carb. operate correctly at idle and rev up fine? Possibly post a video.

I'm installing a tachometer tomorrow. The carb seems to operate okay. Idle seems good and it seems to rev okay. I don't have a lot of experience with carbureted engines though, hard to tell what's normal! I bought a new carb from you guys today, hopefully that helps things

That carb. sounds like it's working enough to at least get you going. Hard to really tell from a video but if you're pulling 18 inches at idle you're in the ballpark. Hook up a tach and report the RPM's with speeds.

I'm not sure what rear end your truck has in it currently, but it doesn't hurt to check out that also. We've had scouts here that have had completely stripped spider gears that would barely move maybe 15mph max speed. Just a thought. At least jack it up and spin a tire....

I still think the clutch is perfectly fine, you even have a 12" from the looks of it. Unless you REALLY screwed up something I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I have taken off the rear diff cover already. I think it’s a Dana 90 or 60?
The gears looked okay. I had to rebuild the brakes, so I pulled out the axle shafts and everything in there. I can spin the rear wheels by hand when jacked up, takes some force but they spin okay.

I’m really feeling optimistic about the new carb, but I’ll wire up the tach and take it out again hopefully tomorrow. We have snow forecasted soon so I gotta hurry haha

I got my tach installed but it’s really cheap and bounces around a lot.

I removed my exhaust when I was working on the fuel tank and it was so rusted it basically fell apart, leaving the exit crushed to less than an inch, which I think was restricting enough to cut power.

Just got a new exhaust fabricated and went for a drive, I think this loss of power is fixed or at least better. First gear kinda sucks, but second gear really pulls now. It’s definitely picking up a lot more speed than before.

I have a new problem where the engine just stalls. I feel the power dissapear and when I come to a stop, it’s dead. I’m hoping this will be fixed with the new carburetor. I should have waited to drive it. Tired of pushing this thing up hill!

I think I found the solution to all my problems.

I restored the gas tank months ago and thought I was thorough enough. I spent at least 10 hours running chemicals through it, shaking with nuts and bolts inside, draining and refilling. Then 2 days of electrolysis which seemed effective. I covered the inside of the tank with POR tank sealer, then cold galvanizing compound on the outside followed by a rust protectant coating.

In the back of my mind, I’ve known this was the problem all along, I was just too proud to admit it to myself. Lots of time and money spent going after this issue.

I finally noticed my bowl wasn’t filling at all anymore. If it was before, it was slowly, which explains why my power would cut at higher RPM and why I could drive it after idling for a short while.

I just ran it straight out of a gas can and it seems much better. I can see in my fuel filter there’s a lot more flow, the thing is almost full while idling. Before it would maybe have I tablespoon of fuel in the bottom.

So new gas tank, new fuel filter, blow out the lines, I think I’ll be running finally! I’ll update this thread again once all these parts arrive. Thank you all for the help so far.
