Wiring seems to be mostly ok, but it's got typical signs of having been tinkered with by po(s). I've seen much much worse though.

Anyhoo, can anyone id this crispy little electrical gizmo? It's hanging down just below the dash above the gas pedal. Both ends go up into a rats nest of identical green wires, which I'm hoping not have to untangle and trace right now. The part looks like maybe some kinda small inline coil with a melted insulator, but I'm just guessin'. Aftermarket/po or not I can't tell.

Do I need it? It appears to have both male and female spade connectors on, I could just toss the burned up thing and hook the wires back up to each other...?

Yes, unplug it, remove it & plug the two connectors together.

Iirc, it is to reduce cvr noise interference in the am radio.

circuit 28 - 28a: that is a "choke" that serves a suppressive function for rfi generated by the cvr that is a "vibrator" type power supply. It reduces/eliminates what would be a fairly high frequency "buzz" heard through the am radio speaker. Same purpose (different device, which is a capacitor)) as found mounted to the ignition coil bracket that reduces rfi generated in the ignition system and heard through the radio speaker.

Anytime you can pull a circuit number off one of the wires and provide it that would be helpful. It looks like the number on at least one of the wires is still legible, but can't make it out from the angle of the pic.

Yep, all one color. The wires, circuits, are identified by numbers near their terminations. Be careful not to smudge or remove by cleaning or handling. They are essential for checking proper hook ups, and I think easier than tracing colors.
 
Yep. Confirmed tonight that it's # 28 and 28a as '75-200 said. So I went ahead and pulled the burned up part and reattached the 2 ends as well. Thanks guys. Timely and correct as usual.

Fwiw, there's no radio installed anyhow. That's way way down the list of priorities for this rig. Down near muffler bearings and taillight fluid.
