Oil pressure gauge

My oil pressure gauge immediately goes to approxiamtely 1/3 level when I turn on the key. (engine not running.) when I start the motor it stays at the same position. During driving it moves maybe 1mm. Any suggestions before I replace the sensor? Bad ground? I just was wondering if it was something simple before I ordered a new sending unit. Thanks.

Yeah, its me again. How do your fuel and temp gauges behave? Those two along with the op gauge rely on a constant voltage regulator (cvr) which is a tiny device attached to the back of the oil/temp pod. If all three gauges are misbehaving, this part could be the culprit. If even one of the three is working properly, then the cvr is fine. If the oil is the only gauge misbehaving, then it could be the gauge itself, the sender or the circuitry in between.

Wow. You're a one man show. Thanks for the patience with my questions. All other gauges are functioning as designed. Water temp, fuel and amps are normal. I'll check the wiring first, then move on to the sending unit, lastly the gauge. I'll try to figure it out.

You're welcome. The ammeter gauge is sort of a "lone wolf" as it is connected in series to the battery and the alternator. It isn't associated with the cvr like the other gauges are.

I agree. You can't expect too much out of a 33 year old gauge. Does anyone know if it's a generic sender? Maybe something that napa will have on the shelf?
