Oil pan

Just a question: what years did IH start usind duel drain plugs? The oil pan I had on my motor (345) had 1 drain on the main sump. I was given a bad motor and noticed the pan had 2 drain plugs, 1 on the main and 1 on the front sump. So I cleaned it up and and switched them. Makes sence right? So as far as I know my motor is in a 75 Scout 2. So which year did this come from?

The reverse is actually the case. They started with two plugs and then reduced to one. Going from two drain plugs to one plug was just one of many cost reduction techniques employed by ihc over the sii production run.

I have a 77 w/out 2 plugs. Haven't checked the 79 yet,but have a few other motors that have 2 plugs,but not sure of the year.Jeff

Yea if it was in early models maybe early 70's. Glad I found it and switched though. Makes more sence to have 2 the way they seperated the pan.

My '80 had the "reduced to one plug". I drilled out the depression and welded in a suitable nut slit widthwise to reduce its height. I'll try to post pics later. The thought of always having a quart of cruddy oil left behind doesn't sit well with me. That means each oil change only gets about 75% clean fluid.

My '75 xlc had two plugs. Here's the fix in case anyone wants to know how (relatively) easy it can be.

The way ihc did things, it would be tough to narrow down with precision. Even the parts catalog mt-130 which covers '73-80 model year scouts lists the double sump pan with two drain plugs. We've got one guy in this thread saying his '77 is a one-holer. I have a friend with a '77 that's a factory two-holer. Ihc basically phased old things out at the same time they phased new things in. Apparently, they must have felt this particular change wasn't a big enough deal to document.
