No Reverse

Hey, nice to be back. First post in a while. A lot has happened on the Scout since last post. 1976 Scout, 345, 2 bbl. As far as I know it is the original transmission (automatic)

recently I noticed that shifting through gears was getting stiff. Since I had owned it no service had been done so I took that as a sign that it was due. However, when I got to work the next morning the stiffness had gotten so bad that the shifter cable snapped as I attempted to put it into park.

Since then I have dropped the pan to check for any obvious problems and changed fluid/filter. The old filter had a couple flakes of metal in it, but was really better than I expected. No loose parts sitting in the pan. I can still drive it with no problems in all forward gears, and put it into neutral. But I cannot even push the shifter forward past neutral.

So, I am either looking for a tip on diagnosis or/and any recommendations on an honest transmission shop in portland.

Remove the shift cable clevis from the shift lever on the transmission. Then manually move the shift lever by hand and determine if the valve body has an issue.

It's very common for the actual shift cable itself to fail in many modes. Move the shift stick without the cable attached to the transmission and see what happens.

The typical failure issues regarding loss of reverse do not result in this type of problem. But it is possible that somehow a portion of the reverse band or the strut has made it to the shift cam on the valve body and is actually jamming the lever movement.

Got home and did as instructed. Shift lever moves easily. Cable sticks at same point when detached from shift lever.

Part ordered. Thanks a lot. Seems like a logical diagnosis, but for some reason I assumed you wouldn't be able to move the lever by hand so hadn't even tried. Now I can back out to go to work instead of left-foot-pushing out of the spot on a decline.
