No reverse or 3rd

I just picked up a 78 Scout I plan to use as a plow truck. The previous owner mentioned he heard a pop noise from the auto tranny then lost reverse and drive (still has 1st and 2nd). I'm planning a rebuild but never done an auto, rebuilt t18 from a 76 Scout before... Figure thats got to be worse than an auto. Any recommendations on tranny rebuild kit manufacturer and any special tools required for the job?

Welcome to the forum. I suggest perusing any pertinent threads in this section if you haven't done so already. You should get the torqueflite a727 handbook by carl munroe and/or a factory service manual for your Scout. As far as special tools, a trans jack comes in real handy for removal and installation. A parts washer is great for cleaning all the parts once you have it torn down. You'll need some small picks for removing seals from their lands. You'll need some type of compression tool such as a large c-clamp or valve spring compressor to compress the front and rear servo pistons in their bores. You need a clean workspace free of dust, pet hair, and assorted shmootz, especially when you get into the valve body. You'll need an 8-point socket and an inch-pound torque wrench for the band adjustment screws. A foot pound torque wrench that can be adjusted down to 6 ft/lbs (72 in/lbs) will suffice if a inch/lb version can't be sourced. You'll want to pop for a reman torque converter. Your existing one will satisfy the core charge. IHPA sells a B&M brand trans in a box which includes the master overhaul kit and a shift reprogramming kit all in one package. I've installed one in a buddy's Scout. Pretty good quality and value.

Also food for thought. The two seals and bearing for the rear output shaft, located in the adapter of the 727
bearing & seal kit

I currently have my trans on the bench awaiting a rebuild from the kits mentioned here in this thread.
