Hello everyone, im a new Scout owner trying to educate myself before I start any major projects on the toy. I need some help diagnoising a problem. Heres the lowdown.
72 sii, 4x4, 345, Dana 30front 44 rear, 20 t-case, 727trans. Stock tires and wheel size.
I have a problem with no kickdown and a lazy shift or a push type shift. I recently serviced the trans, clean inside, maybe too clean. Adjusted the bands according to procedure. Kickdown lever hooked up and adjusted properly. It does not kick down ever. The lazy shift is worse from 2nd to 3rd and it shifts through all gears under 25mph. Adjusting the kickdown rod length seems to have no effect on shift points. Unfortunatly I don't have much po history. Also it has an aftermarket B&M shifter and shift cable. Both are going back to stock asap. Sorry for the long post. Any help would be appreciated.:icon_rotate:

Before doing any additional work on the transmission, have you done the full throttle up-shift test found in the service manual? That should be real close since what you have described is all "stock".

What I really mean is the stuff found in the chart at the top of page 14 in the cts-2578 service literature, which in turn is the first section of the 727 stuff in the cts-2304 manual.

Gimme some information regarding all that stuff and we'll move forward.

Thanks for the reply. No I have not done any of the tests in the manual. I only recently aquired the Scout and have not ordered the manual yet. I will order one and work through the tests you are talking about. I notice you mentioned the cts manual. Is this the manual I see advertised on IH onlys parts site?

Yes...the "cts" manuals are the service manuals

the "mts" preface are the parts lists.

Thanks, ill order one up this week and start reading. Ill get back with results asap. Thanks again for the great help.

So I have my book and am ready to do the tests. I need some clarifacation. I need to hook up a tach and start from a dead stop in drive? Floor it wide open and record the shift points in rpm range? Is this correct, or does the vehicle need to be on jack stands and not under load?

The best way to do the shift test is with two people! One to drive it and the other to record the data.

Just pick the overall "size" of the vehicle based upon what you know about it. This is not some kind of definitive answer, but based upon overall knowledge of how the "street legal" vehicle was set up originally.

Once we know exactly what you have going on, then we can determine what needs to be done going forward.

A little update, funny thing about having a service manual and double checking everything. I decided to run through all the kickdown adjustments one more time. I summond a second person and low and behold the kickdown rod was being interfeared with by the crappy B&M shift linkage. A couple of tweeks, readjusted the rod length and throttle cable and I have nice crisp shifts and wot kick down. Thanks again for all the help and expertise on this forum. Having a second person was the key, I needed someone to operate the throttle while I watched how everything was working..
