Hello from reno.
I was given 2 Scout two's ... Am looking to take them and build one Scout that I can us as a daily driver ... Love the size and look of the Scout.
Want to keep things as simple as I can ... No ac ... No fancy radio.
This rig will be used to get me around town, to work and to the desert to camp .

What I am looking for info on what engine to build up milage is important ... I dont have to stay with an IH motor. Like the fact that the rigs have Dana 44s with disk breaks. Know that one thing that will go is the auto trany ... Will change out gearing and tire size to help to get the best milage .

This is to be a simple rig...

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the gimme scouts! The best mileage is going to come from a diesel engine. Even then, you'll be looking at low 20's tops. An inline six cylinder Nissan diesel engine with both turbo and non-turbo variations was an economy option that became available about midway through the production run. The cummins 4bt engines have been successfully swapped into a number of scouts. You won't do better than mid-teens with any gas-powered v8. A 258 cubic inch inline six cylinder gasser sourced from amc was an option available during the sii production run known as the "power thrift six". Those were good for about 18-20 with decent performance. scouts are heavy and have poor aerodynamics. Two factors that you won't be able to do much to change.

I dont have to stay with an IH engine ...
Know the scouts are heavy ... One of the things I like about them lots of steel ...

Never said you had to stay IH. If you've got the bread and the fab skills, damn near anything can be made to fit within reason. I forgot about the 196 4-cylinder option in the Scout II's. They're underpowered for the vehicle weight, so axle gearing was low...ie 4.xx to compensate.

Welcome to the addiction!

You have come to the right place to increase your knowledge.

There is no reason not to expect around 15 mpg with the sv345 and tf727 if everything is up to snuff. A little better with the sv304, not quite as good with the sv392.

You can swap a lot of stuff in and out but you are going to have to travel a lot of miles before you "pay" for the swap in increased fuel mileage.

When it comes to low end grunt you can't find a better engine than the ihc sv engines. And the low end grunt comes in really handy if you are trying to go slow.

Be aware that you can't compare an ihc v-8 to any v-8 produced by the big three.

Dry weight of an sv is more than any small block and heavier than most big blocks.

Top engine speed is 3400-4000 rpm. Which means that about the time an ihc engine is running out of steam the other makes are just getting into their sweet spot.

Because the design parameters of the ihc engines was long life at affordable cost most ihc engines will easily go 500k miles given any sort of reasonable care.

With the addition of modern electronic ignition and electronic fuel injection you should be able to see a marginal increase in fuel efficiency and a great increase in drivability. The electronics will greatly increase drivability when you are in adverse conditions and/or you have to use less than optimal fuels.

I am not trying to get you to be a purist and keep your scouts all ihc. What I am trying to say is don't swap out the ihc power unless they are completely toasted.

I realize that shifty and shiftless are personal preference but don't rule out the automatic out of hand. The tf727 behind the sv engines are pretty much bullet proof. Keep them from overheating, change the oil and filter on a regular basis, and don't abuse it too much and you should be able to get almost as many trouble free miles out of the transmission as you can out of the engine.

Good luck.

Hi. I too am new to the forum, new to scouts and new to reno
let me know anything you find and I will too. I'd like to do a drivetrain swap on mine but don't think I can due too smog. Mine's a 77

Washoe county smog laws suck!!!
Check out 'the rules' before you attempt any motor swaps on a street legal vehicle from '68 up.
Or just register is outside washoe county....

I have many IH's, even more parts, maybe even a little knowledge??

I'm in sparks, shoot me a pm for my email/phone #
