New to Scout family...

I recently acquired my grandfathers '77 ss II Scout. It's been kept in storage since 1998 and only has 40k miles on it. It has the 4 cyl. Gas engine and came with a hard top I can only assume they didn't offer from the factory on these scouts.

I am going to make an ongoing thread of how it comes along, expect some questions and need of tech assistance as I am by no means a mechanic and have never messed with scouts before.

Will post pics with more info when I'm not on my work computer...
 
Welcome. Enjoy it while you can. Read up on the pre-oiling procedure before ya go starting it up. Horrific things can happen if one goes out and starts up a vehicle that's been in storage for so long. Lots of good threads on general maintenance and up keep.

Scout II's did in fact come from factory with a hard top that is removable.
 
We drained and replaced all the fluids but have already cranked it up and had it running. Going to read that now....hope I haven't shot myself in the foot
 
How it looked when we first picked it up. Over a decade or dust but all in all, better than we expected

So far we've changed fluids, new starter, gave it a good wash and took the roof off. Tried out the wench and surprisingly it works just like new. Also trying to figure out what exact lift it has, my uncle put it on years ago and can't remember what or how big it was.

That looks like an amazing find!!! If it is an actual Scout II ss you are correct in that it should not have had the hard top. Also, it looks like a warn 8274 winch (still one of the best most desirable winches around). It appears it is sitting in a modified warn Scout II winch bumper. Also a very cool find! Over all looks like a treasure!

I encourage you to read up and learn about the Scout II ss, there is allot of information out there about them.
 
Looks to be in great condition. :)

I didn't know SSII's ever came with the 4 cylinder.

Oops. I missed and overlooked the ss. Thanks for the photo update. Looks to be in great shape. I have a friend near me who has a 78 non ss the he acquired from his father who purchased it new that originally came with a 4 popper. I forget if it was the 152 or 196, since there has been a 304 transplanted in. He's currently having issues with smog nazi's.

The body appears to be in great shape other than both back quarter panels need the bottom rolled back out. Very little rust, the most was in the top that I'll be replacing anyway. Hope to get the wench and bumpers off, cleaned and re-painted here in a few days.

Next is getting the interior looking better, most importantly the dash. It's a hodgepodge of after market switches compliments of my uncle...

Would have been the 196 in a Scout II.
 
Yea I was a little skeptical about a 4 cylinder in something this size but everyone online swears it'll do fine for the job. If it wasn't for the sentimental factor being it has been in the family for over 3 decades I'd love to swap out for a bigger motor and change up some other things. All I want out of it is a close to original looking Scout other than the lift and tires, that I can take out on the weekend or do some trail riding. No mud bogs or stump jumping for this one.

Does anyone happen to know what original rear end/gears came in these? Another thing my uncle added was a locker rear end, that I don't particularly want. Being it'll be getting just as much road time as off road

Do you have the line set ticket for your Scout? It will tell you how it was equipped from the factory. It May still be taped to the top of the glove box.
 
We took the fuel tank off yesterday, and it is so rusted out it's beyond repair. I've started checking prices on replacement fuel tanks and I'm finding a lot of these plastic/rubber fuel tanks. I have no experience with them. Are these as good as a metal tank or am I getting what I pay for?
 
Plastic doesn't rust, but liner can be poured into the clean metal tank to inhibit internal corrosion. Does 19 gallons give you enough range or would 33 work better?
 
19 gallons would be plenty. It'll never be a daily driver. Just drove around on the weekends and during hunting season
