New Alloy 6 on 7.25 HD Wheel Being Considered

While on my so called restoration journey with the 1200c travelette, I like others have found no acceptable wheel options are available. The steelies that companies fab up are just ugly. The problem is the lug pattern which is the 6 on 7-1/4 aka the big 6 pattern used on older dodge and IH light line trucks prior to 1969.

After having a lengthy conversation with some good friends in the wheel industry we have decided that it is about time to have one or two styles of wheels patterned and cast. They will be the hd 3000-3400 lb rating needed by the 3/4 to 1 ton trucks.

The major considerations are.
1) selling price.
2) wheel diameter 16 and 17"
3) wheel width 8 and 10"
4) back spacing
5) style
a. Something like an alcoa with round holes.
B. A slot wheel (kidney bean)
c. A d like the halibrands and et wheels.
D. Lets have some recommendations from the guys who might be interested..

Just think how cool it would be to go out and buy a nice set of made in the usa wheels for our old IH for a good price. Right now that is not an option. The split or 3 piece wheels they came with are becoming harder and harder to get serviced and in some cases dangerous. We all know a good wheel has a price but in most cases the wheel can make a truck look bad azz.

The more feed back the more apt we would be to take the plunge and bank roll a project like this.. The ideal situation would be to have enough volume to offer the wheel at a normal price. The wheels will be cast and machined right here in the usa... No chinese crap..

So lets hear what you think and what would be the appropriate style..

Post up a photo representing the style and note a size...

At what time during the mfg of the current 8 bolt wheels are the bolt holes drilled? Could a existing wheel style be made without the 8 bolt step and be drilled for the 6 bolt pattern instead? No special casting or design. Just use an existing wheel but drill for the 6 bolt pattern.

The back side of a 8 bolt wheel is small for the big 6 pattern.

I have a few good friends that make wheels for a living and the liability of selling a non drilled wheel is not appealing to anyone I know. I have also contacted some I am only loosley aquainted with and they also recommended a special heavy casting to have the proper stregnth needed fot the 1200 and so on. These are going to be off roaded like you can imagine. I would not want a compromise.

I like the idea but personally I am switching to GM 1 tons,
better brakes, more gearing/locker options, + it makes the rims choices infinite.
Don't get me wrong I'm not getting rid of the stock axles, @ least not yet...

All my rigs are Scout II's, otherwise I would be all over this subject.

Although, I do have several friends that May have some enterest

Scoot, cool tell a friend..

easy to swap in GM axles. That's not my interest. I like things the way they were built. Not saying swaping in 8 lug gear is bad just not the way to preserve the old iron.

 any time. I'll try and bring it up next weekend when I have some of the local IH fellers swing by my cave.

Btw - I currently still have family now in your area, somewhat. Next time I go down to visit them, it be cool to get together with ya and a few others in that general area.

Really no significant interest. Cost to tooling them needs some hope of roi.:frown5:
had these made by stockton.

What timing! Came here from google just to ask about those wheels: what did a set of 4 set you back? Also, can I assume you sent them 4 splits and they sent you back those 4 beauties?

I have used stockton wheel a couple times before and wouldn't hesitate to do so again, but these days I live across the country and have to think about things like freight when considering tco.

Yes, I sent them oem splits and they cut out the centers and built these to my specs.
To test them I sent one and had them build the first wheel ( spare in the bed mount). Turned out well so they got the job to build 4 more.
I recall $180/wheel in my hands.

Given my obsession to use the oem cap and the fact that I had two sets (one nos) of oem caps, the decision was made to go this route.

I am 18 and lost 3 fingers changing a tire on my R120 with split ring rims, big 6 bolt pattern. Tapped the ring round real good it was nice and seated when i started but there really needs to be a safe alternative for those who don't have a tire cage

6 x 7.25? Are they still available? It looks like Stockton is out of business so I can't get them made up from the split rims I have

Ya but I just had my knee replaced last weeks I won't be selling any parts or trucks until I am back on my feet again (6-8 weeks?)
