Im thinking I need a new ignition lock cylinder? So for starters the key can come out of the cylinder and any position and I have to play with the ignition switch a couple times to get it to start the engine. The key is kinda worn out and I think that's why it comes out but more then that I have no clue.

This is where a little more info would be helpful (what year and model). But here goes

if it is a column mounted ignition then the lock cylinder is not a switch. It is connect to a switch via a rod on the top of the column. The switch is near the fire wall on the column.

This only applies to the keyed column if it is on your dash then it is indeed a switch.

Sorry its a 72 Scout 2, non tilt. I replaces the ignition switch during the rebuild. So between that and the key falling out of the lock and having to play with it to get it to catch and start thats why I was thinking the lock cylinder.
Thank you

I never use the key on my Scout, except to unlock the wheel on the rare occasion it gets locked. Perhaps the location of the switch is not adjusted properly to the rod. What kind of "play" do you have to do with the switch to get'er to crank?

If the key falling out is only do to a worn key(unknown at this point) you could drive it to a locksmith to see if a sharp, new key could be cut. How many keys, bottle openers, lucky rabbits feet, leatherman tools and useless bobbles do you have on your key ring? The less weight the better for a host of reasons.

Hey nick, I replaced all the locks in my Scout. IHPA has the kit and it wasn't too expensive. That way you'll only have one key. I do have an extra steering column that has a lock and key in it if you want it. Danny
I just went out and checked the key lock and the key will pull out in all positions. It's not too loose, you do have to pull on it but I don't think it will just fall out. It seems to be tighter than the one on my Scout as I haven't installed the new lock cylinder yet. Danny

Hey guys. Im thinking it might be that the ignition box under the dash just moved a bit and that's why I have to play with the key to get her to work. But I still think I need to replace the key. I only have the keys for the Scout on the key ring so not much to worry about there. Thanks for the offer Danny but I think im going to go with your idea and replace them all. And start fresh
thank you for all the input
