Loud Clicking/Poping when turning Now With Pics

Just bought a 1965 Scout last Wednesday.put it into 4 wheel drive last night in some dirt by my house. When I started to turn the front diff gave a loud click or pop when moving forward and the tire actually pops and a little bit when the click happens. Going to post a pic of the front diff because I still don't know that type of axel it is I have been told Dana 27 or 30. Does this sound like something a locker would do or does this sound like a broken axel or something internal. I will also drop the diff cover and inspect the gears and change the fluid tonight to see if its anything obvious. Thanks guys I will post a pic asap

Your Scout came stock with a d27 in the front. Dropping the cover to change out the nasty puke and inspect the internals is the first order of business. Too many variables and unknowns for an accurate cyber-diagnosis at this point.

A d27 is oem in a Scout of that vintage. It could possibly have a Powr-Lok diff installed that has not been serviced correctly and is now "chattering", a very common issue.

Or,...one or the other or both of the joints in the inner axle could be worn out/broken.

Or,...a front hub bearing assembly is way too loose.

Or,...a hub lock (if equipped) is busted internally (very common).

Or all four.

Dropped the cover last night found some dirty oil and some teeth looked like spider gear teeth. I think this is a open unit but not completely sure as it does not look like the normal open diffs that I have seen. When the truck was off the ground both tire would move in the same direction. I had my friend turn the tire the opposite direction and we could make it go backwards and one forwards but it was definitely not easy to turn like an open diff would normally be.

Also if the carrier were to fail and get all chewed up would I be able to drive in 2 wheel with out problems or are my axles going to be flying around in the case. Thanks guys

Around the shaft that the spider gears are on looks like half is missing.

That is a spicer Powr-Lok limited slip unit. Simply rebuild it.

If the rig has locking hubs, simply unlock 'em and drive on for now. With the transfer case in 2h of course.

With the transfer case in 2h of course. Would it be bad to put it into 2 low? Any idea where to buy one of these rebuild kits.

Number one, we don't know what transfer case you are referring to! You must give us details regarding all components on this vehicle which is obviously highly altered from it's oem configuration!

You can't put any oem setup transfer case in 2l, even a d18 or d20 equipped with twin sticks oem. Those have to be modified internally to allow 2h operation, even the "twin stick" versions of each.

2l means exactly what it means...two wheel drive (rear axle engaged only) in low range on the transfer case. That is the same condition that exists when 2h is selected except the transfer case is in 1:1 mode (no gear reduction).

Ya need to spend some time researching your entire vehicle and summarize all it's equipment and post the details. Otherwise we'll be going around and around about stuff that is meaningless in this situation. We don't deal in "I think" or "maybe" around here, we must know exactly what each member has and is needing information in support of, otherwise we're guessing and we don't have time to guess and play around back and forth, this is a business, not a beerthirty session like other technical support forums.

Parts for reconditioning all differential/gear trains are available from many sources, including ihon. Service parts for spicer 27 axles are not generally available on anybody's shelf due to a decided lack of interest/sales opportunities, but parts can be ordered and supplied from our distributors.

Sorry about that I will definitely be doing more research and figure out what I have and stop posting maybe's.
