Lead or not?

I am new to IH having recently purchased a '73 1210 which came with a 392 but currently has a 304 residing under the hood. I have been finding a lot of great info on the forum here but have not come across reference to whether or not lead substitute in your gas is needed/recommended. Did IH come with hardened valve seats?

No lead additive necessary. They have hardened valve seats. If only they didn't have to be force fed alkycrapgazz. They were meant to bind corn, not burn it.

Thank you for the info. I have one unhappy lifter and I was concerned about the cause being no lead. After reading through threads about oil starving I am thinking new recommended filter and extra quart of oil will remedy the situation.

Try some marvel mystery oil in the crankcase and an italian tune up (drive it hard up a long hill with a load). My '71 travelette had a sticky lifter or valve that would tick sometimes for 15 min when the engine was cold. It would also ping real bad even on premium. After a good tune up towing another 1210 home all problems cleared up never to happen again. The po was an old timer and since the truck was never driven hard it had carboned/sludged up. This was about 5 years ago and it's still going strong.

That is what I have going on. Cold start pretty loud but after less than a minute gets barely audible but is still there if you know what you are listening for. From what I can tell about the truck (pine needles combined with decomposed granite) I am guessing it spent time in the Grass Valley area (ironically). Has a farmer john style steering dampener mounted with chain link pole u-bolts, and a couple bailing wire brackets. My best guess is an old timer po who definitely used the truck but never abused it.
