It might be a bad Starter connection...

The truck was starting difficult for a couple days (having to turn over for a long time before it caught, taking a lot of the battery).

Then one day, after running it about a half hour and parking, I came back and the battery only turned on the radio/instruments when I went to start it. No starter action whatsoever.

Desperate, I crawled under the truck and wiggled the wires on the starter; battery too. And voila, it started like normal then. Haven't had any more hard starts since then either.

1) anyone seen this kind of thing before?
2) or have any recommendations for maintenance or service I can be doing for the starter?

If that's all you did was wiggle the wire's/cable,then it's prolly what's wrong with it, also cracked, burnt, loose -solenoid ? Won't know till you take it apart an look, start with your battery cables, make sure they're good an clean an clamp down good on the battery terminal's. Jeff

Maybe heat soak on the starter solenoid. ??? that is what mine was… .

on the form there is a write up about how to bypass the dash and steering column and get a full 12 volt power from the battery to the starter solenoid . I did the bypass and my Scout never had this problem again…..

That's your truck's way of telling you it would like you to closely examine the cables, wires, and terminations for poor contact and corrosion. The heat soak remedy mentioned doesn't require that anything inside the cab be bypassed. In a nutshell, it involves the addition of a remote starter relay, most commonly a Ford style, but there are other options. Its not a bad modification to make if you notice that your starter seems to have a harder time getting the job done when the engine is hot than it does when cold. If you're plugged into them hill country binder boys and girls down yonder way, there's probably a half dozen of 'em that could walk you through it for a a sixer of shiners. The process is also covered extensively in this thread:

Just for future reference, does this truck have an auto trans?

Thanks for the input gentlemen. I have no idea what a heat soak or remote starter relay is, but I'll look at that link and figure it out.

Trevor, that tranny is a manual 4 speed. Still haven't fully gotten it down after almost a year owning this truck (think the clutch is worn, even with careful shifting it's jerky).

Good to know on the trans. Reason I asked is because of a fairly well known starting issue that can be related to a failed part found only in the auto units. I wasn't thinking that yours rose to that level even if it did have an auto, but it was something I was prepared to let simmer on the back burner in the event these symptoms popped up again. Now I don't have to.
