I have talked and looked at so many forums and I think im gonna go nuts! Im trying to find out what axle this is. I was told it was a pair of d44's. The tag on the diff reads 41-4 373. I know the gearing but everyone I talk to says this can't be a Dana 44 with drums all the way around.

I hope the b day was good and everyone had a good time!

I think you are right. It came of a 73 Scout II but it has an open knuckle and the second pic is of the same axle. I have looked at pics of diagrams of d30's and 44's and they show that the 30 should have like 3 or 4 nuts on top next to the wheel assembly and a 44 would have a single nut like the second pic I have.

Scott has it right. The quickest and easiest way to differentiate between a 30 and a 44 is by looking at the shape of the diff cover. When you know what to look for, its a dead giveaway. There are d30's out there on scouts that have disk brakes from the factory. So too are there d44 front axles on scouts that have drum brakes as oe. Very rare in both instances, but they do exist, so you can't always go by the outters. The pumpkin never lies.

Right on! Im new to the whole Scout/truck axle set ups. The guy I got them from said they were both d44 but at lest the gearing matches is what I was worried about.

Are the d30 still a good axle? Im not trying to make my 64 Scout 80 a crazy off road rig. Just more of a good everyday driver/trail rig for all around.

Thanks for all the help by the way! For being a new Scout owner, it is nice to have good people for help.:yesnod:

It will be fine for that. Just don't exceed a 33" tall tire. Does your Scout still have the 152 and 3-speed? That combo is a might sluggish even with the stock 4.27 gears. With the taller 3.73's it will be even worse. Taller tires would be even more fuel on that fire.

No. Its in the process of getting a Chevy 350 put in it with the turbo 350 trans. So I think this is about the same running gear as my old 95 1/2 ton gmc.

I want to do a front disc conversions with Chevy calipers and backing plates but not sure if it is worth it on a Dana 30

It is if you plan on sticking with the small-ish tires. Ambitious undertaking with the drivetrain swap. Ordinarily I'm not real big on re-powering scouts with some other block, but in the case of an 80 with the 152/t-90 combo, it will make for an all around nicer driver. The little 4-poppers are great for what they are and with low gearing and small tires they can climb trees, but they leave much to be desired on the highway.
