Intake gasket replacement

Own a 73 IH 1110 with 392 V8. Taking entire front end apart to repaint/restore engine, engine bay, inner fenders, etc.

contemplating whether or not to remove the intake and replace the gasket. As long as I have it torn apart it seems like the right thing to do, but I know I read somewhere that it can be difficult to get a good seal on the intake of IH engines using new gaskets?

should I leave it alone if I don’t suspect a problem? The vacuum readings are a little on the low end, but other than that I don’t know that the gasket needs replacement?

appreciate any tips or thoughts.

thanks

It's the valley pan that can be difficult to seal. If your going that far, the steel OEM head gaskets are a common failure for me. The steel shim's rot/rust out after 40/50 years.

Make sure you get the gaskets for the improved cooling 392. It came out in '73. On the improved cooling the water tubes go into the heads, the older style went into the block.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but the 392 IC used composite head gaskets from the factory. Also some later non IC did as well.

I don’t believe my 392 is the IC version. I saw some pictures online showing the difference between the IC and non IC and my block looked like the non IC

Ok guys…looking for opinions. Not afraid to admit I’m a nube. Question is, should I replace the valley pan seal on my 392? I’ve read a lot of posts about the difficulties guys have had getting it to seal properly. I don’t suspect any leaks or problems at the moment, but if I have the manifold off and pan exposed should I replace the valley pan seal or leave it be? Thanks

If you have the intake off, replace the valley pan gasket. Whoever says those are difficult to replace are probably not very skilled at the mechanics trade.

Thanks ihpartsjeff…I am a novice at auto repair, but fairly skilled mechanically. Will give it a shot. Wondering if you have any tips, recommend steps/procedure a guy should follow to install the valley pan and intake? For instance some people recommend using permatex copper RTV, some say to use a copper spray, some say no sealant at all. Just wondering what the best steps are to give me the best shot at success/no leaks. Thanks for any help

The Right Stuff rtv is great for the valley pan. Put a small bead on the valley pan, set the gasket down, and then another small bead. Snug up and let sit 15 to 20 minutes before final tightening. For the intake gaskets I usually apply GasGaCinch on each side of the gasket before installing. Then torque to specs.

Thanks, I plan to. Does anyone know if they would be available at a local parts store? It’s great ordering through IHPARTS because I know I’m getting the correct part, but the dang shipping costs are high these days for such a small part. I’ve ordered a lot through IHPARTS and they are great.
