IHCS Rides The "Cool Bus"

Imagine the year is 1958 you are 10 years old. You live 20 miles into the hills above molalla oregon in a little place called maple grove. Its 7:30 in the morning on a cold wet morning as you stand at the end of the lane waiting for the bus. At last you can hear the sound of a motor running and you know the bus is just around the corner. You look down the road and that is when you first lay your eyes on……..

The “cool bus”

Ya thanks for the tip!....it took some real negotiating. But he wanted to see it go to someone that was going to preserve the history of the rig. In the end, that won out over a chasing a big wad of cash on ebay. I still had to pay more then I wanted to but because of the condition of the rig and the local history I think it was worth it.

The very fact that you remember seein' the rig rollin' as a kid makes any price worthwhile for this piece of history!!!

We all needed to see this bright spot after the loss of shannon this past weekend...

Haha, you actually ended up with it, that's great! Is it a 5 speed w/ a driveline brake, and is the tcase twin sticked? Looks like it will be a great restoration. can't wait for some more pics.:yesnod:

I thought you might end up with this. I wish you would have had me tag along on the recovery. I loved looking at this with your Dad.

I don't think Mike was 10 in 1958.... That would make him 60+ years old. I know he has a few gray hairs -- but 60?? Maybe ken remembers it.

Ha ha...:hand: very true. I'm not that old! I remember the maple grove school house but not the "cool bus" the grade school that I went to use to play maple grove in sports. What I remember most is the little tiny gym and the fact that they needed to let girls and 5th/6th graders play on the 7th & 8th grade boys basketball team so they would have enough players...:p I'm sure this bus was retired before that.

Even then, Mike always got picked last.:ciappa:

ya but that was only because I was under the bleachers with a couple of the girls from the other team...:winky: :winky:

"show me yours and I will show you mine" says little Mike with a sly grin spreading across his face. The larger than normal 6th grade girl, if you can call her a girl, spit a stream of tobacco out the missing hole in her teeth and lifted up her 70's style toughskin skirt grinning from ear to ear. It was all Mike could do not to spew chunks from the stench that wafted his direction.

"someones calling my name, I think they are picking me for basketball" said little Mike as he turned to run as fast as he could out of those bleachers. "grab that little bastard matilda. They aint never called his name." said the large 6th grader. "I aint done had my fill o fun yet".

As Mike landed on the ground hard on his back a stream of nightmare black tobacco spit streamed in front of his face and a tear rolled out his eye.:cryin:

- this is a reenactment. Any resemblance to the real events of that fatefull day are purely accidental. ;)

Sounds about right. I still wake up in a cold sweat some nights....:prrr:

I know where that rigs little brother lives. Same color but its a pickup owned by the forest service. Same winch but with pto drive for multiple accessories.

Good find guys. I'm sure I don't have to remind you how 'unobtainable' most of those body parts are.

No reminder necessary. The good news is the body is in real great shape. The interior is pretty good to the seats are beat up a bit but the headliner is near perfect. I did get it running last night and it runs pretty well. I need to get the brakes back in working order and take the sucker for a drive.

Post up some underhood deetale when ya can.

I May have a completely fresh carb that I'll donate to the pot if ya promise to keep this rig at least two years as a permanent part of the collection!

And I "May" have a new breaker plate assembly for the distributor! No doubt it needs to come out for cleanup also.

So let's get the motor into first class condition...I've got very little experience with them 6poppers and need to git dirty arount one! Hope it's as original under the hood as it is outside the hood!

Whatcha think about the fuel delivery system...fulla crap or clean???

I have a service manual for those rigs I'll get to ya, but I don't have a parts list available right now.

I’m not sure what I think about the fuel system. I was planning on pulling the tank to clean and treat and replacing the line and I probably still will just to avoid future problems. However last night I replaced cap, points and rotor. Shot a little starting fluid into the carb pulled the choke shut. I then hit the key to see if it would fire and the thing not only fires but starts up and then continues to run. It ran pretty rough at first then I eased off on the choke and it idled down real nice. Now keep in mind it is running on gas that could be 20 years old. :icon_eek: I can’t wait to get some fresh gas in it. :p the under hood is very intact. I will try to get a few more pictures but these are what I have for now.

My guess is that 20 year old gas is probably better than the f'in e10 that's being pumped into our tanks now.... Will have to slap in the rebuild kit for my homelite 750 chainsaw now, cause it is running like shit, and I suspect some water now remains in the carb..:icon_exclaim: I bet mm will concur with me.:yesnod: have you figured out what all those levers operate? Is it a hydraulic, cable, or manual linkage clutch?
