hub removal problems

I am trying to remove my hub to replace the outer axle seal because it is leaking. But the problem is the hub will not come off, I maxed out my puller on there and taped it and it wouldn't budge. Is there something that I need to do besides take that nut off? A bigger puller of slide hammer?

Assume this is the front axle of a Scout 4x4? Would help to know if it is disc or drum brake equipped. Regardless, there shouldn't be any need for pullers and bfh's. You've got the allen head screws retaining the hub dial/clutch assy. Behind that is a snap ring around the axle shaft. Then the hex had bolts for the lock hub body. Then the lock washer and large lock nut, followed by the pre-load nut and keyed thrust washer. If the rig has disk brakes, the caliper must be disengaged and set aside carefully to avoid rupturing the flex hose. Now the rotor is free to be slid off the wheel hub. The wheel hub is retained by six nuts in the case of a Dana 30, or 8 in the case of a Dana 44. I'm usually able to wiggle the wheel hub off by hand at this point, but in the case of a stubborn one, some gentle tapping with a non-marring deadblow May be necessary to get it moving.

Oh boy. Yep, that's why details matter. I'm not nearly as familiar with the 80 models as I am with the twos. If memory serves, the drum is swedged onto the hub. I have not tried to remove one myself. I'll half to defer to someone who has. Sorry.

You need one of these and a 3 lb. Hammer.
great deal on otc tools 7394 at tooltopia.com

Nothing else will do, believe me.

In tough cases an acetylene torch with a #2 tip to quickly heat while pulling with that tool helps while nothing else will.

Leave the nut on loosely, when it does pop you don't want it to fly off and hit something.

Advance auto parts has the puller.you can buy it,then when your done w/it you can return it an get a full refund, tool loaner program.,I'm sure other parts stores will do the same but napa.Jeff

Well I drove all over today and couldn't find the right puller, but I got a slide hammer and heated the hub up until smoke started coming out from behind. But it still wouldn't come off, the search continues for the right puller I guess.

No foolin'? Why, yer smack dab in fat white boy kuntre, hoss! I vaguely recollect one of the other members of the fat white syndicate having to grapple with this issue several years ago. I'll pick his brain to see what he remembers from that experience and if he has the appropriate puller in his possession. If he does, it'll cost ya a beer or a dozen in rents.

I spoke with my buddy about this and he said that it was indeed a major pita to get his s80 drums removed. He said he went through more than one chinee puller before he and another Scout buddy finally found one that did the job in combination with plenty of penetrating oil, hammer smacks and cursing. He didn't know whether or not the puller they used is still accessible. It likely be this weekend before I can get a definitive answer on that.

Finally found a store with the puller but they wanted a load of money for it and my Dad refused to pay, so I ordered one off of the internet today and hopefully it will get here soon. And just so you guys don't think I'm a loser, the reason my Dad was paying is because I'm 15.

For 15 you're off to good start. You're asking the right questions in the right places. You actually write a lot older than some folks twice your age:icon_up:

Well thanks guys, its nice to know that I don't look like a complete idiot because I'm still fairly new to this sort of thing.

Got it! Got the right kind of puller, heated it and put penetrating oil on it. It took a lot of pounding and work but I got it.
