Holley 1904 Fuel Level Gauges

Well,
michael sent me the two 1904 bowls to retro-fit with sight glasses.
I was ready for them when the arrived via snail mail so I only had to drill the hole and assemble. The attach bolt in a stainless steel 5/16-18(nc) button head machine screw that I put in the lathe and bored a 1/8 hole through for a fuel passage. It is located so it won't interfere with the float operation.

The adapter is custom and incorperated a c'bore for a 1/16 x 5/16 id oring to seal against the body. Iirc is a as3578 -011 oring. I can supply cad drawings of the adapter if needed.

I have included some pictures for referance.

I am sure michael will add great info to this thread after he gets his.

Geez dude!!! Yore a pro! Ya must do this kinda stuff for $$$$$!

That's a great "stem punk" look! That bowl might just end up on my rig permanent! Scruu that weber conversion!

Next up...maybee ya wanna look at cnc'd "billet" fuel bowls with sight glasses???

Is yore carb playin' any more nicer now???

Michael,
they are strong enough to live on a rig but you May want to install seals that will live longer with the shiz fuel of today.

I need to update my 1904 issue thread with my findings.
I did come across some interesting stuff I had not expected. :icon_mrgreen:

Yore dam straight about this corrosive solvent/catpiss we call gasoline today! I had my first personal major malfunction regarding the same just two weeks ago!

I'll crank a new thread to deal with that subject!

Oh yea,

just to clarify what the photos are. The names are the statistics at the time the photo was taken. Eg: flg runing @1lb fp.jpg = fuel level gauge, engine runing, at 1 pound of fuel pressure. Jpg:gringrin:

Ups just dropped the steampunk fuel level gauge Robert!!!

What a nice piece of work! This one will live on my desk here and will actually be put to use later today onna that 1904 I'm having so much trouble with. Looks like right now I "May" have whipped it though so the sight glass will be used to verify!

Thanks again for making these up! It's exactly stuff like this that will always separate the ihon forum from the rest of the chafe!

Talked to Jeff last night, he's definitely interested in the project to "repair/re-man" all these 1904 main wells as you described!

Yesterday afternoon, I gotta call from a dude who does early Ford f100 restos, he needs mucho in the way of carb work for those 6 bangers, as well as dealing with IH stuff. I advised that he get involved with our forum here regarding the 1904 stuff. Mike fiock/mr. Scout referred him to us.

I owe ya dude!

The trip to the hot rod reunion yielded an interesting find. While walking the swap meet section I found the rare glass bowled 1904. The carb is junk but the see through glass bowl is tits.
Maybe the main body is good?

I May install is on my Scout permanent like.

Rk

And it looks like the "spacer" is present also??

When you get around to playing with this, can ya verify if the float in the glass rig is the same dimensions as the one in the IH-pattern 1904? Same for the needle "seat".

Iirc, the only difference is the additional width of the spacer, the glass bowl is virtually identical to the zinc bowl.

I have several of the glass bowl gaskets since those aren't used in zinc bowl carbs, I'll send ya some if needed.

Great score!

Same weekend...similar treasure on our end!

Jeff met a guy at the nats who has a shop in montana. He sent him this stuff!

Three service part fuel bowls for 1904, and three gasket sets.

Bowl p/n is 159075-r1, gasket set is 122572-r91.

Two "curious" items..., notice the "boss" cast into the bottom of the bowl, dead center? Might have been done to allow a drain valve to be installed on the bowl when these carbs were used on many different industrial engine apps? Perfect location for that!

The gasket set is a bit different from what is currently used in most 1904 aftermarket service kits. For one thing it contains only the gasket for the glass bowl! That is the "thin" gasket in the pic. One of the seals for the inlet seat is fiber instead of copper. The base gasket is for the 152 carb application of the 1904, not the larger flange stud spacing as used in some 6 cylinder and early 196 apps.

I haven't done any research on what the primary app of these parts was originally, but I will.

But for those in need of a virgin fuel bowl for a 1904 complete carb resto, we got 'em!

Just anutha bit of 1904 trivia for those who are interested!

Hey Mike, great score ya got there! I think that boss on the fuel bowl was for carbs used on "high altitude" engines that used carbs with an adjustable main jet.

Na, I checked and their boss is different. The Ford's carb bowl is like that though.
