Holes in lifter valley

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm in the midst of my first teardown of an IH engine (sv345)....I just removed the lifter valley cover and there are holes in the valley that look...wrong. There is a round-ish hole between the lifters for 5&6, another bigger one in between 7&8, and another in the front wall of the valley by #2. I wouldn't be worried except that the holes look like they were added to the block casting with a claw hammer, and it feels strange to be able to see that much of the cam from up above. Is this a problem, or just another unique 'feature' of an IH engine.

Thanks in advance.

I disassembled this 345 over the weekend for a rebuild and found the same "claw hammer" marks around this hole in the lifter valley wall between the timing set and #2 cylinder/pushrod bearing hole. So, this is normal? I only ask because this engine comes from a truck which sustained a front collision. Seems like debris could enter through the lifter valley wall behind the distributor. I'm getting ready to take the block and heads to Greeley but am trying to determine if this is a bad block based upon this gaping hole in the lifter valley wall. Thanks to anyone who can verify this is normal or abnormal based upon the location of this hole vs. ones previously discussed in this thread.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Jeremy
