Help me improve my shifting experience 😁

I just bought a 77' Scout II Traveler with a 74' International 392. I don't know what transmission it had but I presume it's am open tranny from that time, it's a 3 speed manual.

1. Going from neutral to 1st when at a stop often requires I slam the stick back, if I just try to push it into gear it feels like the gears aren't meshed.

2. Shifting down unless I get to a very low speed just grinds the gears. Is there supposed to be a clutch brake?

3. Clutch is noisy, maybe just some WD40?

First gear in your transmission is NOT synchronized.
You must come to complete stop in order to shift into first or reverse.
Clutch linkage typically has lubrication points.

Best upgrade you can do is find a T19 wide or close ratio synchronized box.

With not synced first might want to practice your double clutching technique.

Re: Hello me improve my shifting experience 😁

I'm wondering if your clutch is releasing correctly? You say when stopped you cannot put it in 1st, is it instant gear clash or is it resistance to the lever moving into gear? If you do have a syncro first gear and the clutch isn't releasing you will feel resistance going into 1st as the syncro is trying to stop the gear and it can't because the clutch isn't releasing. Can you put it in reverse, you should easily be able to tell if the clutch is releasing and the gears are stopped by going into reverse. Are you met with gear clash or resistance going to reverse?

Going into first I can't gently pull it into gear, I have to pull it back quickly and forcefully and essentially slam it into gear. Then going from 1st to second it goes in easier, maybe a little bit of resistance, same with third.

Down shifting I can't ever downshift to 1st unless I'm going basically 2mph. Second isn't much better I have to be going pretty slow to downshift to 2nd. Otherwise I get a lot of gear clash.

Reverse requires that I'm at a dead stop, but it goes into reverse easily as long as the truck isn't moving.

Assuming the trans is ok, either the pilot bearing is dragging or the clutch is not releasing (which could be adjustment or bad pressure plate).
