Hard top

I have a lift to take my hard top on and off, but my top is flimsy. Is there a good way to strengthen the top with out making it to heavy? Should the ribs be welded to the top?

I would think paint damage and metal warping would be an issue with welding. Lots of people have removed their tops without any need for welding. Where are your lift attachment points? They should be on the bottom as opposed to up high ie: the roof rack or gutter area.

Thanks for the reply. I have bought a lange top a hoist from tops 4 less ( 038-191 blazer/landcruiser/Scout hoist-a-top™ [038-191] - $351.33 : lange originals, home of fine Jeep wrangler and other automobile products, and the hoist a top. ) the top has been stripped of all class and seals and is ready to me linexed white. Just in the process of myself flipping the top over to get it ready it just seems a little flimsy. The two ribs that are underneath the top are only connected at the base of the top I did not know if it would help to spot weld the ribs and different locations.

For me when I lift the top I lift from the top, meaning I hook straps on the inside, one in each corner of the back hatch and and one in each corner of the window/door corner again on the inside. I run the straps out and over the top to a center hook and lift all four corners from one winch hook. This way I am not lifting from where the top bolts to the rear fenders. It releaves the pressure from the sides and picks it straight up, if the straps are adjusted right.
I know on my top when I put a new liner in it I found that the support ribs for the roof were just glued to the top sheet metal and that glue had let go. I welded it but I was also going to paint the top. I am sure it was glued for sound deadening but I insulated the top so I was not worried about it.
My ribs had also sagged I suppose from loading up the factory roof rack, one of those po problems lol

I mentioned having a liner on your top. Did it come with it are is there a place you can find liners for the Scout II tops? Also what is the liner made off.
Thanks

Liners are oem, they usually get pretty ratty and thrown away but I took it out and traced the pattern on to an 1/8 inch plywood sheet and glued headliner material to the plywood.
I was restoring mine so I welded the ribs to the top sheet metal, welded some 1 foot squares for reinforcement for a thule roof rack and I insulated the inside.
Of course the painted and installed the new liner.
Maybe you can find someone close that has an old top liner that you could get a pattern from.

It measures 46 1/2 by 83, there maybe a notch or 2 but it should be close, don't forget the cargo light hole.

I don't have any of the liner during or after install. My hard top is sitting on the shop floor right now I will try to get a pic when the wife gets home.
You can google for automotive headliner and you will have all kinds of choices for colors and material, I used 3/16 foam back and bought 3m spray adhesive, use good glue!.

I got a pic for you, you will notice the horsehair insulation, that came with the top (oem) I also used the bubble/foil sheets as well.

Hope that helps

Does anyone have a few close up pictures of the inside roof panels and if so could you post them. I have a friend who is good with fiberglass.

Thanks

Not sure what your asking for?? Do you want pics of the fiberglass side panels or the oem press board roof liner?
