FWB plus two

The so. Oregon fat white boys managed to salvage two IH rigs this weekend.
The first is a '77 sii, at, 304 that the po says he had in 4wd only once. We're thinking of naming it blue thunder, because it really rumbled when we fired it up.
Second is a '71 1210 at, 345 and a whole lotta wasp nests.
Our excitement over our salvage has been tempered though by the maycroft family loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Chad.
We'll try to post some more pics as we work our way towards getting these binders roadworthy.

The fwb's made real strides on blue thunder this weekend. It sounds like a good, strong runner with great oil pressure. Curt, the po and a heck of guud ol' boy, said the vehicle had been parked sometime in '04-'05 due to an electrical issue which prevented the engine from running. After peering under the hood and noticing the gold box, I immediately suspected that the module was the likely culprit. Once we changed the erl, erl filter and pre-lubed the engine, we then tested for spark, and sure enuff there wuz none. Luckily, cambo had stashed away a gold box of unknown condition, which we swapped in place for testing. Within minutes we had strong blue sparkies out of the plug electrode thanks to the now known good condition spare gold box. Then it was just a matter of finagulling a temporary alkygaz supply. Blue's motor roared to life and the valve train was remarkably quiet from the gitgo. Like cambo sez, it doesn't look like this pig has ever been offroad. We'll rectumfy that sitcheeyashun quick, fast and in a hurry. Now we just need to service what should be a functional 727, inspect the brakes, take care of a handfull of minor issues, clean it up and put it back in regular service.

Update time on blue thunder. Yestidy the fwb's congrigatid fer some 727 servicin'. We drained the fluid, changed the filter, cleaned the pan, drained the converter, and adjusted the bands as per mm's my-t-fyne instrukshuns. Then buttoned everthang up and poured in sum fresh bug joos. Fired him up and am happy to report the trans shifts into r and d in a very quick, positive and smooth manner. We cudn't really drive it much more than out of the gee-roj and then back in as we're still nursing it momma's milk thru a small can which john-bo walked along beside with as I took the helm. Next on our list is to attack the on-board fuel system, so the beeyotch will be self-contained once again. Meanwhile "mongo," our '71 1210 continues to patiently wait his turn for credence clearwater revival, fwb style.

you've got a purdy brain
Long as it stays platonic, we'el git along jus fyne!
Meybe I'll bring the yeller rig along sum-tyme 'an yu kain chris'in it one 'a yore speshul rig names:idea:

A good Sunday at shop fwb. Blue thunder was released for his first supervised daytrip and promptly went to visit his previous owner. One of the best things about saving these old rigs is the response you get when you take them back for a visit...lots of smiles and good stories. Juust a few more details and bt will be making some noise.

Yes it was a good day especially in light of the recent frustrations the fwbeez have experienced in bringing this fine spesseemyne back to respectability. That's all part of the game though and makes the positive experiences like yesterday's reunion all the more gratifying. Like you said yesterday cambo..."five shit eatin' grins," all centered around one inanimate amalgamation of obsolete, rusty parts.

Obviously ya got tha shifter shaft seal out after three weeks of jerry fuckin' with it??? Or did ya jes' pack a tampon down around the shaft and call it dun?

I never heard you scruus whinin' about that last weekend...guess you was ate up with them blowup dolls and the tie rod??? Does the tranny actually shift now or did ya tow it around on it's maiden voyage??

Bt iza playtex-free rig fer now. We managed to extrikate the seal without even mungin' up the mating surface. That wuz the main source of frustration I wuz referring to. The tranny shifts dam gud with immediate engagement out of p/n. We even got it to kick down a couple times on our brief road trip. The engine seems to still have some decent poop to it. Being a '77, I wonder if this has a partial or full throttle kickdown. Care tuh spekeelate? All in all, weez got hi hopes fer 'ol blue.

Regarding "which valve body might be present...here's my idea...but it's not nearly as definitive as pulling the pan and takin' a gander!

The tire rolling diameter is pretty close to oem...most likely axle gearing is also original based on what yawl have found.

The most common "full throttle kickdown" valve body is just that. If everything is adjusted correctly, when cruisin' along at say 45mph in high gear/"d", you have to virtually floor the loud pedal to make kickdown...it will hold in second then (with wot) until about 60>65mph and then shift to high/third while holding wot.

If it's the last gen "partial throttle" valve body, then it will upshift just the same (again if correctly adjusted) as the full throttle version...but when doing the same "test", the trans will downshift to second without having to apply wot at any road speed under about 50mph.

In actual operation, due to the extreme weight an sii carries around, this downshift scenario is not all that noticable nor is one more desirable than the other! The reason for the engineering design change had to do with emissions inna dynamic mode in later years once the feds started clampin' regarding specs under actual driving conditions and not just an "idle only" situation.

Either today...or tomorrow, I have a dude bringing me a 727 that has a scruud pump in it from not paying attention to engaging the torque converter when the engine was re-installed. I'll have to pull the pan to make the repair (tranny will be bench work), so if it happens to have the partial throttle kickdown valve body I'll take some pics and post for reference. If the tranny is oem to the rig, it May be a part-throttle item...but who knows...right now it's just..."broke"!

Gud 'splainin'. Fwbeez don't care wut it iz jes so long as the dam thang werks gud. Knowin' wud jes be fer hee haws n' gee gaws. I lern't that lesson 'bout proper converter installation way back afore I could even vote, not to mention comingle with jerry...leagully anywayz. I hired a "mechanic" to install a warm 351 cleveland/fmx combo in my hi skule hotrod fitty-seven furd peekup. Dude slammed everthang tuhgether w/out makin' sure the tc was fully set and then tried startin' the motor. Dumb butt kudn't figger out why the engine wudn't crank over, so he kept tryin...'til finally it did turn over...bang!
