Future IHPA Headquarters

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

After cashing in my last beer bottle I finally had saved up enough money to place an order for a 40' x 60' steel building and have the plans drawn out. It has now been 4 months since we last excavated soil.

attachment.php

This is where we left off in April.
attachment.php

With the plans now in hand it was time to take some more measurements to see where we were and where we needed to be at.

attachment.php

The southwest corner of the building was still to low.

attachment.php

And thus more digging had to be done.

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

Looking like good progress! Glad your new headquarters are starting to take shape!:ihih: :icon_wink:

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

That "red" dirt looks just like what we have around here if you dig down a foot or so. We call it beavercreek red. Linda and I have lived here since 78. During those years we added all kinds of stuff to the garden area to improve the soil; then 8 or 9 years ago, we needed a new septic system. The new drain field required the entire garden are to be dug up for the leach lines. All the digging brought the red stuff back up to the top and we started over.

Glad to hear the new shop is going to happen soon. Keep putting up the pics.

Yore halfway there!

Are we still on for an xmastime move-the-shop holiday??? Baklava energy snacks will make short work of the materials transfer!

The clay soil we have here is known very well in Nevada County. Instead of trying to doctor up the soil here I brought in several yards to use in our garden.

With any luck we will be moving in by the end of the year but man I'm beat after this week end. The Ismail labor day weekend labor camp had a lot of activity going on. If today isn't too busy I should have time to download more pics.

gettin there!

Slowly but surely!

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

If I make it up to ihon hq for the Christmas party I could even stay a couple extra days and help......... Or screw things up.

looks very nice Jeff. Can't wait to see it in person.

The mear hint of lava production makes me happy.:yesnod: so mm keep it up and I'll come to the land of many trees and eat your stash too. :hand:

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

Getting back to the build if it wasn't enough I had another side project that I wanted to get done. I had willy dig out the area between my firewood pile and rock pile so that I could build a garden shed as well as make room for my rv trailer as well as install electrical and water. Keystone garden block was used for holding back the soil. This has been a project that I have been working on little by little so you'll see some pics pop up on this every once in awhile. I also needed this area finished to use as a staging area during the rest of the build of the shop.

attachment.php

Next up it was time to dig the footing for the retaining wall. A trip to our local rental yard and we brought back 'mini me' a very small excavator with a attitude.

attachment.php

attachment.php

Let the digging begin. Both myself on 'mini me' and willy began squaring up the soil and then digging out the footing.

Here are we cleaning out the initial footing.

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

With the initial footing cleaned out the center 2' trench was dug out. Darren used a walk behind trencher to cut the intial trench and I went back with 'mini me' to open it up to 10" wide while willy kept the extra dirt away from our trench.

attachment.php

Yes I got 'mini me' stuck. Took a strap and a solid tug from Darren and 'mini me' was out.

attachment.php

Some pics of the trench after it was all dug out. Just for perspective it is 44" wide and 3' overall deep in the middle.

attachment.php

attachment.php

The first load of road base was brought in. More on this later.

attachment.php

For the next weekend our plan was to dig out the footings for the shop itself as well as trench for the future electrical and water source located at the rv pad/garden shed area. Knowing how hard the soil is around here we stepped it up to a large diesel powered trencher.

attachment.php

attachment.php

We began Friday evening with the trench for the water/electrical.

attachment.php

We waited for darkness in order to use willy's laser to set the corners of the building footing.

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

With the trench dug things were looking good.

attachment.php

Until we noticed that we trenched right across my leach field for my septic system.:mad5:

attachment.php

attachment.php

We also clipped a main water line. I knew this was going to happen as I had no previous knowledge of its exact whereabouts.

attachment.php

We also located the electrical heading out to the barn.:yikes: fortunately we still have power out to the barn.

attachment.php

So a trip to town was made for more supplies. We needed some sand, conduit, pvc, infiltrator and drainage pipe.

attachment.php

Of course when you bring home big bags of sand kids will find out and start building sand castles.

attachment.php

Here you can see conduit being layed in the trench and then sand shoveled around it.

attachment.php

With not much going right this day we also had a problem with using the trencher around our freshly dug out wall footing. After some trial and error it was decided to abandon the digging of the building footing and concentrate on the wall itself. Since the pad needed to go down another 4"(we thought we had the pad height right but realized we miscalculated) Darren used the trencher to slightly dig up the rock hard soil so that it could be dug down later.

attachment.php

attachment.php

At the end of the day I had Darren digging me out a trench for a hose bib when the machine broke. Sorry no pics of the carnage.

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

With the trencher returned back to the rental yard we headed over to 84lumber and loaded up on rebar.

attachment.php

We made a quick work shop out of the car trailer and began cutting and bending the rebar to length.

attachment.php

Darren bent the #5 rebar off of the trailer itself saving us the cost of buying or renting a rebar bender.

attachment.php

With the rebar done it was all layed out along the length of the footing.

attachment.php

With line up marks painted on the surface of the soil set up of the rebar began.

attachment.php

Chad stopped by and jumped in and helped finish out the day with us.

attachment.php

attachment.php

attachment.php

Here's a shot of all the rebar installed. Can you say "over engineered!". Looks like a dam caltrans operation.

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

With more building materials on the way it was time to spread out the road base. The yard in general had become so dusty(like living on mars with the red soil and all) that it was a relief getting this accomplished.

attachment.php

attachment.php

attachment.php

With the road base down the first load of materials showed up - the block for the retaining wall.

attachment.php

attachment.php

I also brought in some more keystone so that I could continue to work on the rv pad/garden shed retaining wall.

attachment.php

With the county inspector giving us the ok it was time to pour some concrete.

attachment.php

The pre-meeting.

attachment.php

With the first lower section of the footing poured Darren followed behind with a concrete vibrator in order to make sure no air pockets were left in the concrete.

attachment.php

And then the sun came up!

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

While Darren vibrated the concrete myself, Dad and willy continued on with the pour.

attachment.php

Pretty soon we had spectators.

attachment.php

attachment.php

attachment.php

attachment.php

My neighbor clyde cam over to check on progress as we had coordinated our schedules as he also had some concrete to pour over at his place.

attachment.php

The night before the pour I worked late and got the garden shed pad formed up in case we had extra concrete. Well we had more than enough so clyde, his finisher(I forget his name) and willy poured out the garden sheds pad.

attachment.php

attachment.php

attachment.php

With the concrete trucks gone it was time to lay down the first row of block especially while the concrete was still wet.

A quick walk down the footing and all looked well.

After what seemed like a long day(we were done for today by noon) the first row was set.

The following weekend(or should I say last weekend) Darren, willy and myself began laying down the next few rows of block.

Yes beers were consumed in the building of this wall.

Playing a cruel joke on willy(no more beers in the 6pack holder).

Work continuing on the wall.

Yet another day where we worked from sunrise to sunset.

The following morning it was time to install more rebar before we could lay down another row of block.

By the end of Sunday we had 4 rows out of 9 done(85' long wall). Not bad for some guys who are not masons by any means.

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

Very cool! I dig the progression pics....makes me miss norcal. I lived in rocklin with dreams of getting up into your neck of the woods but found myself in socal again ;( one of these days.....as far as the rattlesnakes go....you only have northern pacifics up there and they are pretty mellow buzzers..I used to keep quite a few different species and norpacs are one of my favorites..looks like you did good clearing hiding spots around your property...shouldn't see too many of them!

Re: Future IHO North Headquarters

Dang!! That's a lot of block for sure. I just built a small 5 block high 20' wall for my Dad and that sucker kick my butt. 85' 9 blocks high. :yikes: you and your crew are going be some tired mofo's thats for sure. Looks like your not buttering each block, but maybe using a cake bag to for filling in between?

At least the weather will be cooling down in a day or two, but you might be done at the rate you guys are building.

Looking good :icon_mrgreen:
