Fuel/vacuum pump on a FI engine

I am installing a fuel injection system on my 1970 800a with a 304. The original mechanical fuel pump was also the vacuum pump for the wipers. I would like to retain the stock vacuum wipers and was thinking of keeping the mechanical pump on the engine to just provide vacuum without hooking up the fuel lines.

My question/concern is if fuel is needed to keep the pump cool and lubricated? Or if anybody else has retained the original vacuum pump on a FI system.
Thanks
Tom

The pump doesn't need the fuel for lube but what I have done when I wasn't sure if all this efi was really gonna work, I looped a piece of hose from the inlet to the outlet filled with fuel. That way it just kept going in and out to keep the rubber from drying out. You could add a little stabil to it.

If your going efi you May want to think about other options in the future like a mechanical or electric vacuum pump or an electric wiper kit.

Go to the junk yard and find a Ford diesel truck in the 99+ range. They had a small electrical vacuum pump that would be an easy adaptation to supply your needed vacuum.
