Fuel Filler Woes and Call for Ideas

I love my Scout for all its positives and negatives. However there is one thing I truly dislike. Fillin her up with gas. Not because gas prices are outrageous, but because the filler hole is a pain the ass to work with. Big hole - little nozzle. Vapors shutting down the nozzle, dribbling down the side of the car, light spray coming back, and having to hold the nozzle in there the entire time with a lot of pressure since it doesn't quite fit.

I have read a few past discussions that touched on this issue but never saw a solution I was looking/hoping for. Is there an aftermarket part or good donor part that allows you to update the female receptacle of the gas filler to a new "more standard version"? One that would allow me to place in the nozzle, leave it as it fills up, and drink my coffee or wash a window at the same time.

Same here!! I cant hold the nozzle fully or it just clicks and stops pumping. Then I have to hold it halfway and takes forever.

I just ran into this problem yesterday, as this was the first time I had found one of the "new" short spouted gas pump nozzles at a station in oregon. One thing that might work, is slipping on a 1 foot length of fuel hose over the nozzle. This would extend it further into the tank and hopefully stop it from clicking off... It would probably be advisable to hose clamp it on so you don't have to go chasing after it when it falls off.:ciappa: idk what size hose you will need for this.

I too have discovered this very unpleasant feature of the Scout 80 when we took my girlfriends new 63 out for its maiden voyage. What a bummer!

At first I thought it was because I blocked off the vent hole atop the rubber tube that goes to the tank. So I re-installed the vent tube and it did the same damn thing. I think its got a lot to do with the angle and flow of fuel to the tank...... So im working on a solution..... I build bicycle frames for a living, so figuring out a really sano solution shouldn't be too difficult.

Im thinking first off that $89 bucks for the replacement filler tube is way too much for something that delivers the same result. So im thinking that a mandrel bent stainless tube with a bung for a vent and maybe even an anti-syphon device with 2-3" length high grade fuel hose to connect it on either end would be the ticket. :cornut: ya know!

Since I can barely tolerate the chore that I have to undergo at the pump every time I have to "fillerup", ive already begun working on a solution..... Will take pictures and keep yall up on what I come up with.... Probably even youtube it.

This is a cut and turn using a chev s10 boneyard filler neck with a real vent hose to the inner fender. There are hundreds of boneyard tank necks that can be modded for this.

Use only "rated" fuel hose for the soft connections, radiator hose will disappear in very short order once exposed to this shit e10 fuel.

This is the passenger side setup, the driver-side will be a mirror image.

Yeah, I like it. Did this set up completely alleviate the fuel spewing all over the place problem?

Im just thinking of something a little more custom with a perfectly aimed bend that lines right up with the steel tube coming from the tank and perhaps a 2-3" length of the high grade fuel hose.

I couldn't agree more about the grade of fuel hose. Found out the hard way on my power wagon about why we should spend a dollar more per foot for the good stuff. I only use the good stuff. Also when doing evap hose, one needs to make sure and use fuel vapor hose, because it is not the same as fuel hose and will not break down and disintegrate.

The unleaded restrictor is still in place along with the flapper. Fills just fine from either the pump up on the highway or a flex spout from a jerry can (preferred method).
