Excellent reading!

it is funny to me how this is all getting blamed on the current government and 'liberals' in general. When the fact of the matter is GM was stinking it up as a company for years -- including during the past administration which had some of the most favorable 'big business' policies of all times.

Have we so quickly forgotten when GM gots it's first bailout $$$?? Oh right during 2008. Who was in charge then? Oh right dick cheney.

Why do I even read these threads? I know better than to jump in a play along with the tinfoil hat gang....

You're absolutely right there is plenty of shame to go around.
The scary part is government involvement in anything, republicans or democrats.
The only thing government is good at is raising taxes and spending. If anyone can name one thing the government does well besides the above mentioned please tell us.

If it seems the democrats are the butt of the jokes it's only because they are running the show right now. Not too different than what the previous administration endured. I agree the previous administration was a bunch of morons by the way.

The original intent of the thread was to point out the auto and the future as it appears to be headed for. I thought it was an interesting article. The dilemma GM is facing saddens me not only for GM but for the industrial might of america.

This says it all for the usa.

Next Monday, after 84 years, GM will cease being part of the dow jones industrial average, replaced by technology company cisco systems inc.

I fear for you youngns' future.
But I'm an old geezer wtf do I know?

I understand your point chris. Our country has been "progressing" along in this direction over the course of several administrations both r and d. Much longer than most folks even realize. The comparatively more rapid pace since January is what has folks like myself buying up all the reynolds wrap we can get our hopelessly pessimistic digits on.

I totally hear the original intent -- it sucks that GM failed as a company. I'm just the kind of guy that lead to their failure. I have a decent job, I drive cars, I'm kind of a car/truck guy -- yet I have never seriously considered buying a GM vehicle over the 15+ years I have been buying vehicles. They never offered anything that I wanted....

But back to my rant!!!!!! :p

many threads start like this but quickly spin out of control into political trash talking.

I get it -- democrats are loser, democrats are to blame for everything, pelosi is a stupid c$%t and coming to take all our guns away, obama is a no good n#$$%r, the south will rise again, and wwiii is just around the corner. Seriously I get I heard it the first 500 times. I have rolls of tinfoil ready to protect myself.... And real guns, and my liberal wife can shoot as well, so don't get any ideas, my supplies will not be easily looted when they start going door to door based on voter registration.

Enough already.... I thought this was an auto enthusiast web site where we didn't play the politics game :icon_razz:

While I believe the efforts to save govrnment motors is a misguided and wrong approach, I can't help but think GM deserves to go out of business.

GM has been coasting on their reputation and owner loyalty for more than a generation now.

The excitement generated by the new models hidden underneath car covers every September were highly anticipated events.

But now when the new models are uncovered there is one model with different trim or plastic body parts. The only difference between an escalade and a tahoe is about $200 of plastic and $20k in the price.

What happened to style and panache? What happened to oldsmobile rocket v-8 power? What happened to wide track pontiacs? What happened to "see the usa in a brand new chevrolet"? What happened to "wouldn't you really rather have a buick? What happened to cadillac, the standard of the world?

Unless and until they make cars and trucks people want to purchase, cars and trucks that are built as well and priced less than the other makes, GM will never prosper.

Well said Mark. I totally agree.

While they at least kept trying (through lots of advertizing, playing on people's "brand loyality" and continually trying to build it cheaper than the competition), they really have been dying since the mid-70's. If you look back, the dismal failures list starts around that time with things like the vega, and goes from there (citation, cavaleir, etc, etc.) and don't even get me started about how they claim to make safe Cars. :nono:

the greatest problem really is ourselves. In that, the unions (and our "need" for them) are really what is killing the auto industry, among others. (look at yellow freight's struggle to stay alive.) I think this phrase sums it up; "greed and poor financial responsibility have led us to where we are today". (from president osama's innaugrial speech, referring to the housing meltdown, though I think it carries over into other areas. And one of only a few Things he's ever Said that I can agree with btw.) and while I see a need for unions, often they get "too big for their britches". Imho, I see it going like this; they assume some authority, which leads to confidence. Then as confidence builds, power forms. Then as power manifests itself, greed sets in. And that's when things start going south.

But I get where terry is coming from, which should be more worrysome than anything. Our industrial might is virtually gone. It used to be that anything with "made in america" on it was worth 10 times anything else, anyplace else in the world. Not anymore. :icon_sad: I suppose that the big question is; when that's totally Gone, what will we have left to offer anyone?

Hey! I know! We can offer keychains with shards from the demolished GM buildings, encapsulated in a clear plastic tube, availabe at the American GM history museum and interperative center, for $4.99 each. And it would make a great destination for travelers from all over the world. And the displaced workers could be retained to be tour guides, or work in the resorts or hotels required for the volume of guests. (which are owned, bought and paid for by the former execs of GM, with strategically redirected bailout funds) with higher pay going to those that learn foreign languages to communicate with them. :frown2:
