Ok I had this postal s 800 that I picked up for the engine. Its sposed to be a 196 that was in it with the bw auto behind it. Started it up, ran great, so I pulled it.

I cant find a block stamping anywhere that says its a 196.....how do I tell if its a 196?

Feeling stupid. :blush2:

IH 4-152 & 4-196 engine id stamp is on a flat boss on the left side of the engine block, at the front end.
Clean off the gunk first.

A shortcut is to look at the oil dipstick tube bolt location. There are two holes, an upper and a lower. The 196 is taller due to the longer stroke and thus uses the upper bolt location.

Take a shortcut if you will, but what is shorter (and as accurate) than looking at the id stamped into the block?

With regards to the 4-poppers, nothing is quicker than looking for that bolt location on the front of the engine the instant the hood is popped. No goo scraping, light shining, or contorting required. My suggestion was in no way meant to disparage or contradict the advice you gave, scott. My intent was quite clearly to supplement it and I think that's plenty apparent. I say let's file this under "more than one way to skin a cat" and move on.

Thanks ih200, it is a 196 e, and I knew about the dipstick bolt scoutboy, but you cant even see the bolts on the front of this engine under the 43 years of oil and grime.

After a whole day of scraping, degreaser, and some wire brushing. It's starting to look like an engine.
