Distributer cap & rotor dont fire -BRAND NEW -

Note: new distirbutor caps and rotors might have a #1 cast into the cap, denoting the location for number 1 plug wire. Ignore this casting and install your plug wires in the correct way.

I was fooled by this casting and spent far too long trying to figure out why the cap and rotor I had just purchased were not working.

Thanks.

A couple points of interest...

1. You say the engine is a 345. That engine was swapped in from some other vehicle as the 345 was not an available engine option for the Scout platform during the 800 production run.

2. You say the engine was running great, so it was time for a tuneup. Huh? If it was running so great, why fix something that isn't broken? I don't get that one.

You've identified your distributor as a Holley points unit. How positive are we with this identification? Perhaps a couple pictures are in order. There's nothing exotic about those distributors and certainly no need to source replacement caps from that particular light line vendor at what I'm assuming to be top dollar for the same cap that can be had for much less from most any reputable parts store.

Aside from trying to shoehorn the wrong cap on the unit, I can't think of anything else that would cause such poor fitment issues. There is an alignment notch cut into the lower surface of the cap that will only allow it to be secured to the distributor with the retention springs in one location.

You must give us actual data regarding the distributor you are playing with. The thread for distributor identification is here:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/ignition-tech/642-ihc-vehicle-distributor-identification.html

If the incorrect distributor cap is installed on the distributor, it's very likely it will crack if the mounting clearance is not correct. These distributor caps (all variations) have been in production for over 60 years and it's not likely one was simply not correctly manufactured.

If the incorrect rotor was also installed, then it will not mount properly either. The parts for any given model distributor must be the proper parts.

We carry all correct parts for each type distributor here at ihon. Why would you obtain this type of part from another vendor who has a reputation for not providing correct applications? Also, as trever mentioned, these same parts are carried at any full service auto parts business.

If you are interested in adding anyting to this post or the great distributor post on this site, consider this bit of info that will help new Scout owners.

The distirbutor cap purchased from napa & from Scout parts.com has a #1 cast into the cap. The #1 is supose point out the location of #1 plug wire. Turns out that it is in the wrong spot. I was using this #1 for my number one plug wire. Needless to say I had messed up my timming by doing so. This is the reason my new caps and rotors were not working. It had nothing to do w/ the rotor. Please pass this info on.

Thanks.
