Difficulty Getting a 727 into Drive

Looked all over the internet and no one seems to have this problem: Going through the gears is fine with the shift lever, until you get to drive - the shifter jams up and doesn't want to go any further. If I go back and forth several times it'll eventually go into D. It happens engine running/not running, hot or cold, doesn't matter. Once you get it into Drive it works fine.
I have a '72 Pickup so it's a column shift. At first I thought it was something in the steering column jamming, but I disconnected the linkage and the shifter slides side to side just fine. I'm kinda wondering if it isn't some mechanism in the valve body? I'm no transmission expert so anything to consider/look at would be most helpful. (Fluid full and fairly new)
Thanks.

Disconnect the linkage at the trans and hand cycle trans the mechanism through all the positions checking for a bind. If none found there, the bind has to be somewhere in the linkage rod itself if it isn't at the column shifter or the trans mechanism.

Thanks. So, with the linkage disconnected it does seem to get a little harder to move when it gets close to drive. I'm thinking it's most likely something with the trans mechanism.
