Dana 30/44

I own a 73 Scout II with drum front brakes, and was thinking about upgrading to disc. Looking at the axle in my rig, it looks like a Dana 44. How do you tell the difference between a 30 and a 44? I have the original build sheet for the truck, but am unable to decifer the codes. The front axle is listed as a "fa-13frt dr axle" with the code 02013. Is it possible that the rig came from the factory with 44s?

Hi trent welcome to the forum! If you have the line setting ticket there should be a bom mumber that will look like this: 0441289c91, this is for the d44 on my Scout. That does not nessasarly mean thats what you have, the po May have done some changing to the axles.
There is a bom # stamped on the axle tube and if you read this post you will find out just where to look. There is also a Dana pdf file on the post that should have your bom listed and tell you what you have. Here's the link to the post:

If I have paid attention on this forum, a 73 did come with a d30 front and a d44 rear. My 74 has both d44's

Thanks for the info. I just picked up a d44 disc front end and was wondering where it came from. I was unable to link to the pdf file explaining the codes in the other thread. The axle is stamped 4239b4 510035 2.
On another topic, can I use the brake booster that I had in the rig for the drum brakes for the disc set-up, or do I need to upgrade to a new brake booster for the discs? Thanks for all the help. Steve.

No you can't. You need the booster from an sii that had front disks originally which began with m/y '74. However not all '74 scouts came with d44's as that was the transition year.

Thanks for the info. Thats a bummer that I can't re-use the drum master cylinder and booster; I just replaced them. Does anyone have any experience with an engine driven hydro-boost instead of a vacuum boost? It sounds like an elegant solution, but a little expensive.
