Dana 20 clocking

Hi, I'm looking into clocking a Dana 20 or Scout Dana 300. I have experienced the catastrophic failure of clunk, clunk, bang when the front driveline cv fails and takes a chunk out of the 727 and you bleed to death on the trail. I have not found any production adapters to clock the texas bolt pattern. Has anyone ever tried to cut the adapter, rotate and reweld? It should be possible. Not pretty, but possible.

I think a driveline strap or a fabricated shield to protect the trans case from impact would be much more feasible. Clocking the adapter housing and t-case would radically alter the driveline angles and the t-case lever angle. Don't think you want to go there even if you could.

What trev said...we clocked the 300 in our 6cyl. Scout up to clear bolts and protrusions on the ax15 we put in, and had to make a lump in the floor and really whang on the shifter:eek6:

My two cents worth:

with the texas style bolt pattern in stock form on the scouts, I don't think I would come close in pondering the thought of cutting the transmission adapter to t.c. And clocking it. It is possible I'm sure. But, a new custom made crossmember would be in order, not to mention the shifter linkage fab. And as scoutboy mentioned, the front drive line angle would be pretty extreme. Especially if one goes SOA with any lifted springs in a Scout.

If the d20 transfer case used the round 6 bolt pattern, as what grumpy mentioned, to bolt to the tranny, like all the other manufacturers, then it would be possible to clock the transfer case with very minimal modifications and still be functional.

I was actually looking to clock it downward as the Scout will be sitting on 42's with full width axles. Not that the Scout will be sitting very high as I am cutting the fenders. The t-case shifter shouldn't be too much of an issue as it is easily heated and bent. I was just wondering if anyone has tried this before. As for the 727 to Dana 300 adapter does anyone know which year and model Jeep I could salvage an output shaft and adapter to conver to the round bolt pattern? Thanks, ...great forum!

I forgot a welcome. The kind folks at IH Parts America provide this great forum for us IH finatics.

I don't think any one has tried to mod the texas style bolt pattern adapter in the way you have concidered. The d-300 and adapeter combo with the 6 bolt round pattern to look for would most likely come from a dodge p/u 4x4 variant. There is some discussion on it in the transmission section. Along with some real good tech info in the stickies. Something in regards to keeping the IH tranny housing and swapping the output shaft and adapter between the donor and your current trans.

In order to adapt a round pattern d300 case to an IH version 727, the trans must be completely gutted so that the corresponding output shaft, planet gears, and adapter housing can be installed. Really that means two torn down trannies...an IH and an amc parts donor from a heep with married d300. There's nothing wrong with doing the swap if you've got the desire, know-how and all necessary parts. I still say just getcha a ding dong strap and call 'er good. How many times is a shaft gonna let loose from the output yoke? Pretty rare occurrence, unless you're doing something you really, really, really ought not to be in the first place.

With the bullgear style t-case to transmission that the IH's use you can't go with a clocking ring like most of the other brands - so the only option is laying out a new texas pattern on the existing adapter or making an all new adapter.

It might be easier to either switch to a 6 bolt round setup or swap to a divorced style setup using a 2wd transmission and a NP205 t-case.... If you are running 42" tires the d-20 might not be up for the task anyway :d
