Could it be the fuel pump?

I have a 1974 IH pickup.
2wd.
727 trans.
Optimized 345 - 2bbl with rebuild.
New gas tank and gas line.

Issue:

a few weeks ago, it would not start, so I primed the carb and it ran fine for a trip to the yard debris landfill... But barely started to get back home.

Tried to start it again this week and nothing. Priming the carb with fuel or starter fluid gets it to turn over quickly but then it dies.

No fuel smell after pumping the peddle relentlessly... Not flooded.

Fuel filter is bone dry... No fuel whatsoever in the filter... And yes, it has $50 worth of gas in the tank!

So, I am thinking that the fuel pump is shot... Yes? No?

If so, how much of a pia is it to replace?

Could very well be the pump. Just to be sure though, why not connect a short hose to the inlet side of the pump and stick the other end in a clean gallon gas can. If no fuel gets sucked from that temporary set up, then you've positively isolated the problem to the pump. Removing the pump is not a bad job. Two fuel lines to remove. Two bolts hold it in place. Easier than falling out of bed.
