Borg Warner Problems

I have a 69 Scout with a 345 and a bw trans. It worked great when I parked it. It sat for about 3 months and now the trans is acting up. Park seems to be reverse, reverse works, neutral works, drive acts like it wants to lock up, second is a little worse, and first locks up. I pulled the valve body and cleaned it and found two of the poppets where stuck. Freed those up, reassembled and I still have the same issues. I also checked the vacuum modulator and it holds a vacuum. There was quite a bit of black sludge in the pan and on top of the valve body, I'm assuming it was band material. I had the valve body out once before to change the shaft seal for the linkage at which time I cleaned the pan and the valve body and only put approx. 100 miles on after that. Anybody have any ideas?

I can't claim much familiarity with the bw's, but I didn't want you to feel ignored. I do know what I'd be suggesting if this was a 727. In looking at the troubleshooting section in the service manual for the bw, I see some of the same familiar basics apply. First being to make sure that the fluid level is correct. The next being to make sure that the gear selector and the shift linkage are in sync. Some of your symptoms would seem to indicate a maladjusted linkage. Going deeper, the locking up in forward gear positions can be caused by blockage in the valve body, which you've already had apart and cleaned. It can also be caused by the rear clutch being applied when it isn't supposed to be. Same can be said for both the rear and front bands.
Did you clean the governor assembly? With the amount of sludge you found in the pan, there May be contamination elsewhere besides in the vb. Did you adjust the bands when you had the pan off? Perhaps the tension on one or both is out of spec. Maybe there is a mechanical issue with your servos or apply pistons. Perhaps there is an issue with one or more seals inside your clutch assemblies that is allowing an internal fluid pressure leak. I know that's a lot of what if's and maybe's, but that's all I can offer. Good luck.

Decided to get it rebuilt, when I got it back it didn't want to go into second gear. It's delayed and you have to let off the throttle to get it to drop in, once it's in it don't slip, so I called the guy that rebuilt it and he said the valve body was questionable because of some pitting. So I found another valve body, took it apart for inspection and cleaning, put it in and it still don't work.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Thanks

I think that's a cop-out on the builder's part myself. It sounds to me like he didn't get something adjusted properly, like the front band for instance. Did he do the removal and installation, or just the bench work? Did he offer you any kind of a warranty? Is he a recognized business, or just a retired guy doing bench work out of his garage? The tricky part now is that you went into the trans and made a repair yourself after you got it back from him. He May try to turn around and say that you did something to make it malfunction. Hopefully he's more reasonable than that.

The guy that rebuilt it works for a local repair shop during the day and out of his home shop at night. He has done several of these including his own. He's going to stand behind it. The problem is he's unsure of what it could be. I don't know much about autos so im trying to gather some info on it. It's got to be something simple as everything works accept the slippage going into second. Once it's in it don't slip

Okay, that's good. Lemme scan through the bw troubleshooting section of my fsm and get back to you with some suggestions.

There's a bit more subject matter than what I expected. About 4 pages worth. Rather than me try to regurgitate it here, if you don't have the service manual for your Scout, send me a pm with your email address and I'll send you a pdf file attachment that has the 4 pages that I think would be most beneficial to you guys in figuring out what's wrong with this thing.
