Beater's Third Life

The beater had taken a back seat to chunk and customer work. I did finally get the clearance lights on the bed operational but no progress has been made on completing the rear section of the bed.

The second optima battery took a shit also, so five years out on two optimas ($350) leaves me with a real bad taste, I'm done with those. Got two plain old bargain basement house brand batteries from bimart in the hole now.

Snaked a new replacement prestolite motor for the winch, so for the first time it's operational also and has already been used to move some rigs around on the parking lot. The relay pak is hidden behind the grille which reduces the possibility of theft around this part of the country, these warn 8274 winches are everywhere and most are missing parts from thievery.

So this past weekend I pulled the trailer for the first time since doing all the work. While not 100% , it's dam sure more enjoyable than before!

The 4.10 axle works nicely with an effortless cruise at 58>60mph now (trailer weighed about 4800lbs. This weekend which was a light load). Pulls right up the hills with very little downshifting manually. Forward stability and tracking in sweeping turns is amazing now that the wheelbase is longer, and the dually rear with sway bar keeps everything flat inna turn.

However, I still wish I had the 4.56 gears out of the dodge axle I was going to use, that would be perfect for this setup as a trailertoter.

The springs are way too much on the rear for this setup now. The rating on the entire rear assembly right now is 10klbs. And for this trailer doesn't sack at all with the tongue weight on. Can't even pull up the equalizers enough to transfer any weight forward.

So...I figure one full leaf and one short leaf will come out of each side next, that should drop the rear so it's level with the front which is ideal.

Now that I'm in college housing, I'm separated from my Scout... But I can finally muster up the internets to conquer all these images in the build threads. I've always liked flatbeds, and this one really takes the cake. Simple and bee-yoo-tee-ful, if you don't mind me dragging this up to say so.

Now to craigslist, to see if I can find a college-local pickall that'll pack into a 14'x17' shared room! Gotta get my binder on.

Thanks kyle!

This project continues to play a back-up role around here to haul axles and engines, pull rigs around on the lot, etc.

The under-bed tool boxes have been located, just need to spring the dinero for 'em and mount. Same for the final cut-out of the rear panels for finishing the bed (in progress now). Then it comes back off for final paint.

Two of the short leaves are coming out of each rear spring once the bed is off again, the spring rate is currently way too high for the intended use. That in turn will allow the sway bar links to be mounted in a better position for action.

I'm still looking for a steal-deal for a dually steering axle geared 4.10.
