Beater's Third Life

I snaked the shortee pos about ten years ago down in pinole, ka where it had been po-abused for the ten years prior to that. Rig was sold/delivered in san rafael and taken across the street from the IH dealer and handed off to a custom van shop where they turned it into a 4x4 partee wagon typical of the early 70's. Complete with portholes, burnt orange plaid shag carpet, and green velveteen curtains.

It's spent the last eight years mainly as a dd, log skidder, and trailer dragger.

Along the way it was used as a toad/moving van in a few trips back and forth to nebraska when momma gotta temporary work-related relocation. That collapsible tow bar has come in really handy over the years in deaddawg recovery efforts.

Here's some super-abuse!

Rigged a redneck fifth wheel hitch several times so I could move our former residence around on the parking lot. That's a kingpin weight of about 1600lbs. Right over the rear axle.

Another example of gross overload, this is knute bein' brung home for prep for a delivery trip (drove not toad) to indiana a few years back. That's a rollin' load of about 8200lbs. So sez the scale.

And here we go again with wilbur sukked outta brush prairie, wa a while back. He spent his life as a horsehauler and that waterlogged bed weighed much more than wilbur hizownself. Wilbur is now a dedicated chunka yard art.

Few years back, momma fixed us up with a beer can maneefol from IH only. That led to blingin' out the engine bay as described here:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/carb-tech/76-beer-can-maneefol-guapo.html

And here:

http://www.forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/ignition-tech/644-ignition-system-performance-upgrades.htm

Once the fifth wheel was unloaded on neighborcarol, we bought a new twenty footer that can be pulled on log haul roads into the backcountry. But the beatermobile has never really been optimized for trailerdrag duty, even though it's now hauled over 20k miles including being snow/ice-bound for several days in texas and the eastern sierra.

A heavily upgraded electrical system (dual batteries on both ends) allows extended drycamp time when needed.

Over the last year, the bitch has been severely neglected, not hardly moved since Binder Bee in July. The exhaust system rotted away two years ago and has been repaired multiple times, but there is nuthin' left to weld too.

So...after scruuin' majorscrewup outta a dodge dually rear axle set, I decided it's time to take her offline for sum luv.

Two weeks ago, me and dave jerked the bed and shell off permanently (yeah that shit is for sale as a package only!). That makes ez access for scabbin' in a new exhaust...and fabbin' a diamond plate alyuuminimum tow body. When the double tire axle goes underneath, a small lift will be done by simply flippin' tha rear spring hangers and then it's gonna git airbags for overloads. Plenty storage will be built in along with a companion crossbed toolbox I already got.

The wiring from the cab back will be scrapped and re-did inna proper fashion, and provisions for fifth wheel hitch rails will be made for the frame and bed.

So the bitch wuz put back in the shop for a winter project and me and momma and dawgs used tha 'rango to haul to the rallye last week. Got about 80 miles and the 'rango turned ta shit with a blowe'd head gasket or sumthin'.

Got the package drug back home and then flogged through tha nite makin' the badly-abused beater a driver agin so's we could make the rallye. Dave snaked me sum mudflappers so's we'd be legal along with some lights to scab on.

The fully loaded bed/cap weighs about 1600lbs. So tha bitch wuz kinda light in the azzend for towin' I strapped the truck box fulla spares on the rails, that put about 500 lbs. Right where it wuz needed. With the bed gone, that's the same effect as addin' about 60 horsepower! Bitch izza rocket ship now and will light the tires at the slightest nudge.

Early next mornin' we hit the road agin and made it to tha rallye in plenty time. Allow a long-term set musta sealed up them woreout piston rings so I didn't even have to add oil this trip!

Only problem...once the bed was off and I powerwashed the azzend, two big cracks magically appeared in the lower frame rail flanges where the receiver mounts. That's what happens when ya overload one of these lightduty rigs by a factor of about four (wilbur, knute, numerous trenchers, backhoes, etc.)!

Ain't got time to deal with that overnight, but we got friends in low places (Loomis) that got all kindsa fab gear and guess what, we're spendin' a whole week with 'em!

During tha trip ta kalifornikate, them cracks didn't heal themselves, but they didn't git no longer either!

So here's a shot of the tow rig in progress somewhere in tha eastern sierra.

Yestidy, ihodarren and ihojeff went ta work on the back end while I handled oilchange detail. Didn't take long for 'em to engineer up a fix for the future needs using' summa them trick CPT tabs and plates!

Darren sandblasted the crack areas, then we raised the rail flanges back into position witha jack. Since paul d., jim price, and navybill and son navyjoe (the efi bubbas) wuz overseein' this job, Darren had ta make it look as nice as paul's linked-up ride which is back at ihon for more goodies.

It's bout' time that you started a build thread! Lookin good so far and that redneckin' tow jobby that you made out of it sure gave me a good laugh. Will be keepin' tuned! :hand:

When I saw the picture of the beater at the rallye I was going to comment that the rust worm must have really been at work to dissolve the bed and completely between when I saw it at the bee last summer and now.

Mark...for an IH rotbucket, this shortee bed is perfection! It's never had nuthin' touch the floor since new 'cause it had a sheet of 3/4" marine ply epoxied in (the epoxy did rot over time though since it was 1973-era technology!) and then carpeted. That's all gone now and replaced with a 5/8" recycled rubber mat. And I kept the carpet on the sidewalls for that "vintage" touch.

Here's a shot of Darren prepping the frame flange plating...idea was to semi-box the "c" section where the receiver attaches but still allow the designed-in flex of the frame and receiver interface.

Here's the ofishul ihon frame section beef-up mod. Now I got sum real CPT schnizz on the beater which will make it bulletproof until yore gummint bans the use of dino-gas for recreational use.

Here's the final after sum rattlecan got blow'd on. Darren also pulled sum maintenance/upgrade on the receiver usin' his magic twanger that makes sparks.

The step bumper will remain since it's in perfect condition and the fabbed bed is gonna blend into it.

Yesterday I pulled out of inventory a full assortment of CPT shock mounts, spring plates, riser blocks, and u-bolts for setting up the d70 rear axle. The rear shocks will be mounted in a more modern orientation once the axle is scabbed on.

Dave found me a used powerlok in his pile that will work in this hd-version d70 with the more pronounced pinion offset. So the gearing is gonna go 4.56 with tall 16.5 tires. Don't know yet what's gonna happen on the front axle unless a companion dually d70 steering axle falls from that sky. I'll deal with that later since the front driveshaft easily is removed! But dually wheels will be used on all corners.

So I'll be doin' the exhaust system next once we git home, while the rear axle prep is underway. The pos needs to be kept as mobile as possible right now 'til I deal with the blow'd-up 'rango which I'm not looking forward to since I hate workin' on modern shit.

Here's sum more pics of the beater in schizophrenic mode over the years.

This was when I wuz helpin' a buncha scoutkidz with floor replacement and body cancer repair in mobile mode. It stayed this way for several months and that is when I knew that sum kinda storage body was gonna be done in the future. There is also an oxy/acetylene rig standing in the corner ya can't see.

And for mikeesquare, he'll appreciate this ofishul binder u. Sliding fifth wheel hitch. The mk iii version included actually scruuin' the blocks together and borin' a hole for the kingpin.

This hitch don't articulate very well though.

The mk iv version is gonna involve sum steel (rebar???)

Here's tha bitch in obdr-mode.

Distributed propane-powered campground inna box, dry bag, fuel supply for about 750 miles, trail clearin' apparatus, and the best...a thermoelectric fridge that will dam near freeze beer! I don't scruu with no ice.

The new bed will have plenty of b+ taps all around along witha much larger inverter built into a compartment with a retractable power cord/worklight.

And a vise! And a spare mount so the roof rack goes away.
