Aquired another 345/tranny & TC

Well I found another 345 combo since the heads I wanted rebuilt turned into boat anchors so to speak.(cost to much)
now I have done some testing on this new (out of a 79)345, I was told it only had 60,000 mi on it and that the motor was in real good shape.
So I got it home pulled off ps & alt and valve covers and pulled dizzy. Primed the oil gallery and it seem to oil just fine.
Then I pulled plugs for a compression test here's the results:
cold crank (dry cylinders I would guess): 90psi to 120psi
I then shot some oil in the cylinders and tested again: 145psi to 155psi again cold engine.
I'm thinking that's pretty good, right?

Now the other question this motor has a 4bbl manifold on it. Here is a pic:

Not having much expirience with 4bbl's what am I looking at here? Spreadbore or squarebore?
If I were to consider using this intake what carb would you recommend?

The tranny supposidly only has 2000mi on an overhaul, this combo was last run 2 years ago and stored inside since then. I tink it's a pretty good find.

Wet comp numbers sound perfect ron. That's a spreadbore intake. The larger secondary holes say so. That manny along with the presto dizzy jives with it being from a '79 Scout. It would have had a carter thermobog on it as oe. Rochester quadrajunks are a popular swap. With those you need to be mindful of where the fuel inlet is. It has to be a side feeder rather than a front feeder in order to clear the thermo housing.
 
Some comments ron...

If...the engine is somewhat original, then it's an application that had a carter thermoquad carb originally, that is a so-called spreadbore setup. Also has a prestolight distributor.

It appears that the connecting link between the divorced choke unit is missing? Bet it's with the carb that used to be there.

And since it has the nine stand rocker assembly, that is a good thing if the rocker shafts and rockers are ok as far as wear points.

Your basic numbers sound pretty decent so hopefully it will be a runner.

As far as a carburetor is concerned, a thermoquad is a somewhat problematic unit to locate that works. I have a terrible time making 'em work out myself as all I get in for service appear to be badly butchered previously.

The best new carb would be something like an edelbrock 1406 since those are "semi-squarebore" carbs. You would also have to add a 1/2" plate adapter to make it work correctly.
 
Just a little update on this motor. So far everything is checking out just fine, inside and out. Here are a couple more pics.

if it runs as good as it looks your in great shape! I'm following along here as I am into my first IH motor rebuild. Thought I was a good gearhead but found some information here invaluble on rebuilding these motors. Good luck!
 
Thanks eagle! Good luck on your build, ihon is the only place I go when I wanr the "real" scoop on this IH junkiron. Well it's going back together as I gat paint on it. Man painting bolt heads is not much fun:smilewinkgrin:

Wow I haven't painted bolt heads on anything since just after highschool, so 35 years. Those valve covers look awesome! :thumbsup:

Eagle; I can't take credit for the valve covers, my wife was very nice and painted the "International" on the for me. Gota love her!

Well my 74 has been reborn!! The motor has checked out and installed.
Oil pressure is running at 40 psi when warm, commpression is avg 155 psi and the 1406 is making it purrrr like a mean kitten,lol
