A New Beginning!

Robert hit it on the head! Flux cored/innershield wire really throws off the spatter. I never had this problem with gas shielded hard wire!:icon_rolleyes: recently it has been the close issue as I was kinda having trouble seeing!...

Been slowly pluggin away at the projects, but decided that in the interest of time, I can't build the flatbed and get it done in a week along with rewiring the pu, so it will get done later....:icon_xd: this will probably be good, as I will be able to get it painted and completely finished before I slap it on. Since I'm still waiting on my wiring shiz, I did do some basic work on the flatbed and am almost done at this point. Shortened it from 8' to 7', cut out the old supports that were falling off (po's welds sucked!:yikes:), welded in new ones, welded on my angle iron lip for the wooden deck, and got the d rings and side rails completed on 2/3rds of it. Taught Dad how to run the cutting torch, so he was having fun doing demolition duty!:ihih: I will have to head into town today as my oxy/acetylene tanks are almost out. Once I finish the passenger side of the flatbed, I will be changing out the center support bearing in the truck, as the old one looks, well, old!:icon_rolleyes: oh, and the trailer is done for now!:icon_rotate:

Eric, it definitely feels good to finally get the trailer done! Finished welding the d rings/rails on the flatbed and called it good for now. I then went into town to fill up the oxy acetylene so that is back in business. Pulled the truck under the tarp and dropped the driveline to replace the center support bearing.... It's a good thing that I am as the rubber surrounding the bearing was crumbling and falling apart!:yikes: don't have a big enough socket to get the yoke castle nut off, so I'm headed over to my neighbors for some help on that. I called about my wiring order and finally got some info!:incazzato: ordered on the 10th, and they didn't get it shipped out until the 20th!:icon_rolleyes: it should be here tomorrow or the next day...

Good thing that carrier bearing didn't come loose at 2500 rpm's!

Everything looks great. Too bad your going to be hauling it all south and leaving us behind :icon_xd:

The carrier bearing got installed, but I did learn a great deal in that process though.... Step one: compare old and new bearing to make sure they are the same:icon_xd: step two: don't tap the bearing on with a piece of tube as you will crush the flimsy metal cover. Step three: if you have failed at the above, rectify it by prying the rubber housing off (not fun), swapping the crunched metal cover with an old one, and using your knife to modify the old housing to fit. basically, the rubber housings were different and the new one was causing the bearing not to turn, so I had to cut some of it off.:yikes: it is still rubbing a smidgen as I'm getting this weird chirping noise and there was a slight pile of rubber dust on the bearing crossmember. I'm hoping that it will go away.... Since my wiring didn't show up until yesterday, I made my new exhaust!:ihih: have to go into town and pick up some new exhaust donuts and bolt the front portion back in and it will be done! My huge box of electrical goodies arrived just as I finished the final touches on the exhaust so I took a pic for ya'll. Off to workin on the binder!:cornut:

Finished up the exhaust and it sounds great! Real quiet when I'm runnin down the road and a nice drone at idle. I'm still getting a very slight vibration going down the road from the driveline, but I'm optimistic that it will go away in time once the bearing seats itself... Got the main body of the harness put together and mayben you might recognize it...:cornut: decided I could build my own on the cheap so I did! I'm going to pick up a hevy duty plastic container for it tomorrow and mount it on the drivers side inner fender. Already got my battery cables cut to length for the solenoid install. So far I ripped all the wiring out and discovered more melted blue wire!:yikes: don't think it would have lasted 10-12 hours on the ride down south!

Finally started on the daunting task of rewiring as demolition really doesn't count!:icon_xd: I have the engine wiring harness done and I discovered that my coil kill switch works as it was off when I first tried to start it...:icon_rolleyes: got the wipers wired up with 14ga wire and man do they move now! Everything has been upgraded in a wire size by at least 1 as I couldn't bring myself to use f'n 18ga! 12ga for the headlights should brighten them up a tad! I ran 8 ga wire from the battery pos to the fuse block for power and jumped off it from there, so I should have maximum juice for all the circuits!:yikes: I used an old od green box to hold the fuse block in and I think it fits right in with the era of the truck. Since I was ripping everything apart I figured it was time to upgrade the starting circuit as well, so I got a 4 post (Ford) solenoid and used some 2 ga short welding cable lengths that I grabbed from work for the new battery cables. IH sure makes me scratch my head a lot trying to update the wiring as it seems they always have way too many wires to do the job!:confused5:

edit: do I need to install a fusible link/maxi fuse on both the battery power out and alternator power to battery? I currently just have a 40 amp maxi fuse on the battery power out to the fuse block.

I have never run anything inline between the battery and alternator or anything inline in the whole high amp side of the starting circuit.

Have another electrical question for ya'll. I was hooking up the alternator charging circuit/ammeter and when I turned it all on I got some smoke from the alternator....:yikes: so something obviously isn't right.... I have a delco 10 si and ran a 10 gauge wire from the batt terminal on the alternator to the battery +, the large wire on the plug to the battery terminal, and the smaller white wire to a stud on the ammeter. I have a wire coming in from the igition switch attaching to the other stud on the ammeter. When I hooked this up and turned the ignition on, the alternator started smoking so I figured I did something wrong...:confused5: I was using this wiring diagram which is towards the bottom of the page:

the delco 10-si and 12-si alternators

The only thing that is different is I'm using the ammeter instead of a charge light. Any help would be appreciated. back to wiring!

The small wire from the alternator plug needs to have some resistance in that circuit. Either from the oe resistor wire or a light bulb. That resistance is there to act as a current limiting device, that is it sets the maximum amperage that can flow through that circuit and the voltage regulators "turn on" circuit. W/o that resistance you will fry the voltage regulator.

In addition that wire must be on a switched circuit or the alternator will always stay "on" and drain your battery when the vehicle isn't running.

No bearing of any kind "seats" itself! Was that driveline tested and balanced after it was re-assembled??? If not, ya gotta halfazz job and it will end up taking out the tranny on top of being so annoying you will park the pos and walk.

So by replacing the center support bearing I have to balance the driveline?:confused5: if that is what needs to be done, then I will do it. Got the wiring 95% done yesterday. I have to figure out which wire does what for the rear lights and wire in the idiot light for the alternator and the trucks main wiring will be done.... Next will be the trailer.:icon_xd:

Did a driveline shop install the center support or did you redneck it??? If you did it, did you retain the original indexing??? If not, then the balance needs to be verified/corrected as well as the "phasing".

I did it of course! I made sure the yoke to the trans driveshaft was in phase by center punching the yoke and the drive shaft so that part is fine. I didn't Mark the rear driveshaft and yoke after the bearing though.:icon_xd: since I only have 2 options from the ujoint I will drop it and turn the driveshafts 180 degress and reinstall the ujoint. If it still vibrates, the I will go get it balanced. Thanks for the clarification.

Finished all the wiring yesterday on the trailer and got the alternator plug wired in this morning. The idiot light goes on and off like it should! I ran 2 ga battery cable to the back of the truck and hooked up some anderson connectors. There is a battery disconnect switch up by the battery that I can turn on and off. I attached an extension to the trailer so the winch can get hooked right up.:cornut: I loaded up the orange truck on the trailer this morning and the old bellevue/warn 8000 drug it up on there and over the fenders without a problem! Since my steering bell coupler is in the Scout now, I had to use the highlift to jack the tires to the right/left in order to maneuver it!:icon_xd: it was raining pretty good and then let up right as I was finishing!:incazzato: I started packing last night and will be rolling out early Saturday morning. Unless of course, my driveline needs balancing...:yikes:

Sorry if this sounds a little dense but I seem to have lost track on which 'binder you are currently working.

Hmm, I am pretty sure he is working on the travelette and the refurbished trailer. I understand that michael is going to tug his Scout down to nocal on his trailer pulled by the travelette that he picked up from the roths last year.
