800 power steering

I am installing power steering on an 800 and I seem to recall reading somewhere that if you use the pump from a truck you wont have to cut the inner fender, is this true? Is this just a different pump or is there a different bracket? Also I seem to have pumps sitting around with pulleys of various diameters, which diameter pulley is best to use. I will be running a hydroboost of this pump also.

Can't say re the fender cut or not, but the fs (at least 3/4 ton anyway) ps pump and bracket are indeed different that the sii stuff. The fs pump does locate higher and closer to the engine than does the sii pump, so it might be worthwhile. It would certainly be a more robust package for the boost. Dunno about pulleys. I've always used what was attached to the pump and not given it a moment's thought.

I am thinking I will try to find a pickup/Travelall style pump and bracket to use 'til I can get the money together for the psc remote reservoir setup. I think the psc setup is what I will ideally need to run hydroboost and my ram-assist.

The psc stuff is great products. In my 74 s-II, I had replaced the power steering gear box rebuilt by psc that was drilled and taped for steering hydro assist ram. Along with thier remote reservoir that has the extra port for the hydro boost brakes.

I am anxious to get this. I already have the hydroboost in, the box tapped, and the ram waiting to go on I just need a proper juice pumper so I can get back on the trail. 37s are damn hard to turn with no power.

Yea - them 37" shoes aint easy to turn with out power assist. My 73 beast is sitting on 35" meats with the stock power steering, and it's not too bad. My plan is to swap most all the psc stuff from my rolled Scout to my beast. Only thing I, too, need to address, is the pump itself, which is mounted to a 345. And it's getten whooped and tired. The pump off my 74 rolled Scout, made by psc, probably wont work do to it being mounted to a straight 6. So, I'm looking into getting one for the 345.

I decided to go with the Scout 2 style pump since I already have the the hydroboost reservoir and upgraded pump from ihon sitting around, also it will be ready when I can afford the psc remote set-up. Now if I could only find the proper pulley to bolt onto the harmonic balancer to make it 4 groove I would be ready to go.

I am looking for the pulley that bolt to the face of the other three crankshaft pulleys and so far the 20 or more different motors I have looked at either don't have it or are a different style pulley with a different diameter bolt circle. I might have found a solution though, one of the pumps I have has a pulley on it that is set back further and lines up with the third groove on the crankshaft and still has about the same drive ratio. Doing it this way, I will not have to move the fan forward.

I am getting that tool today. The pulley I am going to use though actually just has a different offset but is mounted flush like factory. Iirc this pump and pulley came from a 77 that a guy put an agr setup on and could not get it working correctly so I picked up the whole set-up from him and am going through it one component at a time trying to figure where the problem was. I am just going to put that pulley on the pump I bought from ihon so I will have the second return for the hydroboost and a high volume pump. Does anybody know offhand what the fitting sizes are on a '78 caddy hydroboost pump are, so I can have hoses made w/o having to take it apart or drag the whole truck down to the guy making the hoses for me?

Got the steering pump in and was able to test a little bit and measure for driveshafts. I just used an old u-joint rear for this and no front. Now to order the new shafts with cvs and tidy up a few more things. Next I have to decide what diameter tube I want to make the bumpers out of and finish painting the cage along with the other areas needed.
